Chapter 3 - THE FAMILY TRAP

The following morning, Julian filed for an emergency conservatorship.

His petition claimed I had become paranoid, violent, and unable to manage my finances. Chloe submitted a sworn statement describing years of imaginary confusion. Three party guests signed statements saying I had arrived agitated and threatening.

One of those guests was my own younger brother, Raymond.

When I called him, he sounded ashamed.

“Julian said you were sick.”

“You watched him hit me.”

“I didn’t see what happened before that.”

“You saw enough.”

“He told us you brought a weapon.”

“It was your brother-in-law’s compass.”

Raymond went quiet.

Then he said the sentence cowards use when courage becomes inconvenient.

“I don’t want to be involved.”

“You already are.”

I ended the call.

By noon, Julian had locked me out of the company’s public accounts and announced that he was taking temporary control for my protection. Several board members avoided my calls.

He believed humiliation would make me retreat.

Instead, I met my attorney, Ruth Delgado, at her downtown Los Angeles office.

Ruth had represented construction firms for twenty-five years and had no patience for wealthy men who confused confidence with intelligence.

“The main security footage was deleted at 11:43 last night,” she said.

“Julian controls the household system.”

“He controls the resident account.”

She turned her laptop toward me.

“You control the owner account.”

The mansion’s security system stored a second encrypted copy off-site. Julian did not know because he had never read the service agreement.

The full recording showed the entire assault.

It also captured something that changed the meaning of the evening.

Forty minutes before I arrived, Julian and Chloe stood alone beside the birthday table.

Chloe adjusted his bow tie and said, “The doctor signed the evaluation. We just need witnesses to see her lose control.”

Julian glanced toward the entrance.

“What if she stays calm?”

“Mention the house. Mention your father. Make her angry.”

“And if she swings?”

“Even better.”

They had not invited me to celebrate Julian’s birthday.

They had invited me to manufacture evidence for the conservatorship.

My son had planned my humiliation before I entered the room.

The violence had not been a sudden loss of control. It was part of the trap. Julian had simply become angrier than Chloe expected when I reminded him who owned the property.

Ava watched the recording twice.

Then she walked into the hallway and became sick.

When she returned, her eyes were red.

“He told me you were trying to steal my inheritance.”

“I was protecting it.”

I showed her the North Star trust documents.

After learning about Julian’s shell companies, I had transferred my company shares into an irrevocable trust. Ava was the future beneficiary, but she could not sell the company. Voting control would remain with an independent board, and a percentage of annual profits would fund trade schools and employee pensions.

Julian could not seize the company through a conservatorship.

He could only destroy it.

Ava stared at the papers.

“You did this for me?”

“I did it because your father believes love means giving him whatever he demands. I wanted you to inherit something healthier than that.”

Ruth closed the file.

“We have enough for the board and the district attorney.”

I looked at the frozen image of Julian raising his fist.

“No. We do this where he did it.”

Ruth understood immediately.

The emergency board meeting had been scheduled for that evening at the mansion. Julian intended to have me removed as CEO in the same ballroom where he had assaulted me.

He thought he was preparing my final humiliation.

He was preparing his own.
