The bank’s investigation expanded.
Calder Residential’s lender learned that some funds represented as owner capital had actually originated from Margaret’s home-equity line.
The company’s bonding provider requested updated financial statements.
A commercial client delayed a new contract.
Within days, employees started hearing rumors.
Caleb blamed Margaret.
He told a project manager that his mother had become confused and abruptly withdrawn financing she had previously promised.
The statement reached Margaret through the forensic accountant.
For a moment she wanted to publish the kennel footage.
Rebecca wanted to do worse.
“Put the video online.”
“No.”
“Why are you protecting him?”
“I’m not.”
“Then let people see him.”
Margaret looked at her.
“What happens to Sophie when her father’s worst moment becomes something every kid at school can watch?”
Rebecca fell silent.
Margaret had spent months learning the difference between accountability and humiliation.
Caleb had never learned it.
She would not become him to defeat him.
Instead, Nina sent a carefully limited statement to the bank and relevant business parties documenting that Margaret disputed unauthorized use of her assets and had revoked Caleb’s financial authority.
No kennel video.
No family gossip.
Just facts.
Caleb responded through an attorney.
He claimed Margaret had voluntarily financed his company and was now rewriting history after becoming estranged from him.
That argument had support.
Margaret had knowingly approved the first $125,000.
She had signed the power of attorney.
She had signed the credit documents.
The case was not clean.
Then the bank produced access logs.
Several disputed transactions had been authorized from Margaret’s laptop.
Caleb’s attorney seized on it.
Same house.
Same device.
Same saved credentials.
“How do we prove I didn’t do it?” Margaret asked.
Nina didn’t pretend there was an easy answer.
“We don’t prove a negative. We build the timeline.”
They began comparing transaction times with Margaret’s calendar.
One authorization occurred while Margaret was having cataract surgery in San Ramon.
Another while she was at Sophie’s school concert.
A third during a weekend in Lake Tahoe with Rebecca.
Rebecca leaned over the dates.
“Caleb was at the house all three times.”

Not conclusive.
Then the forensic accountant noticed something buried in the device metadata.
Each disputed approval used an accessibility setting Margaret had never enabled.
A saved browser profile.
Named C.
Caleb had apparently created his own profile on his mother’s computer.
