"My son humiliated me in the mansion I bought for him, but the next morning, while he sat in his office pretending to own the world, I sold the house out from under him"

CHAPTER 1 — The Gift Box

My son slammed the antique watch box onto the dining table hard enough to make every crystal glass jump.

For one second, the birthday dinner froze.

The chandelier glowed over polished marble, cream furniture, gold-rimmed plates, and people who had spent the evening pretending respect was the same thing as manners.

My name is Leonard Mercer.

I am sixty-eight years old.

And that night, I learned my only son had mistaken my silence for weakness.

Ryan stood too close to me in his beige suit, his face red with anger. Behind him, his wife Vanessa sat on the couch with a wine glass in her hand, smiling like she had been waiting years for this moment.

The small brown gift box lay open on the table.

Inside was the watch my father had once dreamed of owning.

A restored 1960s Rolex.

Not flashy.

Not diamond-covered.

Just history.

Ryan barely looked at it before throwing it back at me.

“I don’t need another reminder that you think you built my life,” he snapped.

I looked at him quietly.

“I gave it to you because your grandfather would have wanted you to have it.”

Ryan laughed.

Not with humor.

With contempt.

“This house has nothing to do with you anymore.”

The room went silent.

Guests looked down at their plates.

Vanessa lifted her glass to hide her smile.

I touched one hand near my cheek where Ryan’s sudden shove had caught me off balance a moment earlier.

Not enough to injure me.

Enough to humiliate me.

Enough to show the room who he believed I was now.

An old man.

An inconvenience.

A name he had already outgrown.

I bent slowly and picked up the gift box from the floor.

Then I looked at my son.

“Careful,” I said. “You’re standing on ground I built.”
