Chapter 8 - The Decision That Finally Frightened Them

Richard did not fire Mark.
Not yet.
He did something more controlled.
He called Mark into the lodge conference room with Susan present.
Mark arrived looking exhausted.
Claudia came with him uninvited.
Richard placed three printed emails on the table.
“Effective today, purchasing decisions over five thousand dollars come back to me. Susan gets copied on anything involving management authority. Staff stop being told I’m retiring unless I say it.”
Mark laughed once without humor.
“So you’re taking operations back because your feelings got hurt.”
“No. I’m taking them back because you represented decisions as mine when they weren’t.”
“I was running the business.”
“You were managing it.”
“That distinction only matters to you because you like being the last person everybody has to ask.”
The accusation landed.
Richard did not answer immediately.
Because there was enough truth in it to hurt.
Then he slid another paper across the table.
It was a written notice revoking Mark’s temporary authority to approve high-dollar purchases, authority Richard had granted during surgery recovery.
Mark’s expression changed.
Claudia’s changed faster.
“You can’t do this in the middle of ski season,” she said.
“I just did.”
Mark leaned forward.
“You have no idea how much lands on me every day.”
“Then we’ll document it.”
“You’ll break the place trying to prove you own it.”
“I do own it.”
The moment the words left Richard’s mouth, he regretted their cruelty.
Mark heard it.
So did Claudia.
For a few seconds no one spoke.
Then Claudia whispered, “What about the house?”
Richard frowned.
“What about it?”
The small caretaker house where Mark, Claudia, and Noah lived sat on lodge property. Their housing was part of Mark’s compensation.
Richard had not threatened it.
But Claudia had assumed he would.
That told him how frightened they were about Mark losing his position.
“I’m not throwing Noah out of his home,” Richard said.
Claudia looked away.
Mark’s anger shifted into something closer to panic.
“Restore my authority.”
“No.”
“You’re going to regret this.”
“No, Mark. You are.”
Richard expected his son to threaten resignation.
Instead Mark said:
“If you take me out now, you’re going to find out why I couldn’t wait another five years.”
Richard studied him.
“What does that mean?”
Mark stood.
Claudia grabbed his wrist.
Not to comfort him.
To stop him from speaking.
Richard noticed.
So did Susan.
Mark looked at Claudia.

For the first time since the birthday dinner, the two of them did not look united.
And Richard understood that control of the lodge was only part of whatever had made them desperate.
