Chapter 12 - What Ethan Was Really Afraid Of Losing

The direct confrontation happened at Rebecca’s office.

Not the mansion.

Not a courtroom.

No cameras.

Ethan came with his attorney.

Vanessa came with hers.

I came alone except for Rebecca.

Ethan looked at the bandage scar near my temple before looking away.

“You made everyone think I tried to kill you.”

“I told them you threw me through glass.”

“I lost control.”

“Yes.”

“You weren’t supposed to fall that hard.”

The sentence might have been the closest thing to honesty he gave me.

Vanessa interrupted.

“She provoked him by threatening to leave us homeless.”

“You own a condo.”

“You know what I mean.”

I did.

She meant loss of status.

Loss of the mansion.

Loss of household staff.

Loss of the address on North Street that made people assume wealth they did not actually possess.

I asked Ethan about the forged physician letter.

He stared at Vanessa.

That was enough.

Vanessa’s attorney immediately told her not to answer.

But the emotional truth had already shifted.

Ethan had submitted the document.

Vanessa had likely prepared it.

Neither wanted to be the first to carry full responsibility.

“What did you think would happen after I was declared incompetent?” I asked.

Ethan exhaled.

“I thought the trustee would have to deal with me.”

“They would.”

“I thought I could persuade them to make distributions.”

“For your debts.”

“For our life.”

There it was.

Not greed in its cartoon form.

Fear.

He was forty-two, overleveraged, married to someone equally frightened of falling socially, and desperate to prevent the collapse of a life built on assumed inheritance.

I asked one last question.

“Why throw me through the door?”

His eyes filled for the first time.

“Because when you said you were calling Rebecca, I knew Dad had beaten me again.”

Not me.

Richard.

Even his violence had been aimed at an old competition with a dead father.

I stood.

“I’m not the battlefield between you and him anymore.”

Ethan did not ask forgiveness.

He asked whether I had cut him out.

I left without answering.
