Chapter 14 - Linda’s Last Chance to Stop Protecting the Mansion

Before the property was listed, Linda asked to see the mansion one final time.

Ryan initially refused.

Claire surprised him.

“Let her.”

“Why?”

“Because if you don’t, the house becomes another thing she can say was stolen from her.”

So they arranged it after engineers declared limited areas safe for supervised entry.

Linda walked through the front door slowly.

The foyer ceiling was stained black.

Plastic sheeting covered the west hallway.

The smell remained.

Burned wood.

Wet plaster.

Something metallic.

Linda stood beneath the chandelier.

“I remember choosing that.”

Ryan said nothing.

She moved toward the family room.

Christmas photographs once lined the piano.

Most had been removed for restoration.

Linda touched an empty frame.

“I thought if this house stayed the same, your father wasn’t completely gone.”

Ryan looked at her.

“You never told me that.”

“I couldn’t.”

“Why?”

“Because you would’ve said exactly what you’re thinking.”

“What?”

“That it’s ridiculous.”

Ryan surprised her.

“No.”

Linda looked up.

“I would’ve said you needed help.”

The words landed differently.

Not cruel.

Sad.

Linda turned toward Claire.

“I’m sorry.”

Claire remained still.

“For what?”

Linda swallowed.

“For making you doubt yourself.”

Claire’s eyes filled.

Linda continued.

“You noticed things. I made you feel foolish because I needed you to stop noticing.”

It was the apology Claire had never expected.

She accepted the words.

Not reconciliation.

Not trust.

Only the words.

Then Linda looked at Ryan.

“I’ll cooperate with everything.”

“You already are.”

“No.”

Linda shook her head.

“I mean everything. Insurance. Investigators. Whoever asks.”

Ryan studied her.

“Even if it costs you?”

“Yes.”

That mattered because Linda had spent years avoiding exactly that.

Cost.

Financial cost.

Social cost.

Emotional cost.

She had always preferred concealment.

Now she chose disclosure.

Before leaving, Linda stopped at the edge of the blocked west hallway.

“This is where the beam fell?”

Ryan nodded.

She stared at the blackened opening.

“And Sophie was behind you?”

“With Claire.”

Linda closed her eyes.

For several seconds, her shoulders shook.

Ryan almost reached for her.

He stopped himself.

Linda had to carry some feelings without him rescuing her from them.

Outside, the realtor was waiting.

Ryan signed the listing agreement on the hood of her car.

His mother watched.

The decision she had spent years manipulating everyone to prevent was now unavoidable.

The mansion was going to be sold.

And this time, Linda did not ask him to stop.
