Chapter 8 - I FILED FOR SEPARATION BEFORE I DECIDED ON DIVORCE
I did not file for divorce immediately.
That surprised Amanda.
“Why?”
“Because I don't know yet.”
“He threatened you.”
“No.”
“He let his mother pour ice water on Lily.”
“He didn't know she would do that.”
“He defended it.”
“Yes.”
Amanda looked furious.
I understood.
Still, marriage and parenting required more than anger.
So I filed for legal separation and temporary parenting orders.
Structure.
Not finality.
Daniel moved into a furnished apartment.
Lily remained primarily with me initially while assessments happened.
He had regular parenting time.
Evelyn had none independently.
That was not permanent punishment.

“She's my mother.”

Caregiving.

Reality was more adult.

Doctors.
Activities.
He loved her.
He had also failed to protect her and had excluded me from parenting.
Both mattered.
I had strong attachment with Lily.
Stable work.
Support.
I also had a pattern of over-accommodation and emotional reactivity around separation.
Both mattered.
The temporary plan gave both parents meaningful time with safeguards around third-party caregivers.
Evelyn could see Lily only during Daniel's time at first.
No unsupervised overnights.
Then the financial investigation continued.
The $4,500 monthly payments stopped.
Daniel complained Evelyn depended on them.
I almost laughed.
Then learned something important.
Evelyn had quietly downsized other investments and was supporting an adult niece through rehab.
The money was not simply luxury spending.
Some helped family.
Still irrelevant to whether our joint account should fund it secretly.
Then I found another email.
Daniel to Evelyn:
Once Claire sees Lily is calmer with your structure, maybe she’ll agree you should handle school weeks when she travels.
Evelyn:
She won't agree until she loses a few battles.
That sentence chilled me.
Lose battles.
Parenting as contest.
Then:
Daniel:
If she gets Chicago offer again, this helps us show Lily's real home base.
There it was.
More explicit.
Not a custody filing.
Not a legal scheme.
But documentation.
Create routine.
Create records.
Then if relocation ever becomes disputed, argue stability already exists with Daniel/Evelyn.
The strategy had been forming.
And I had no idea.
