Chapter 14 - THE LAST OFFER

Brooke asked to see Rachel alone.

Rachel refused.

They met again with attorneys present.

Brooke looked exhausted.

Her brokerage had ended her employment.

Several former clients had moved their business elsewhere.

She had hired separate counsel regarding the disputed notarization.

Nothing had been resolved criminally or civilly.

Real consequences moved slower than family gossip.

Brooke placed a folder on the table.

Not burgundy this time.

Plain manila.

“I’m willing to cover your attorney’s fees related to the condo issue.”

Rachel looked at Samantha.

Samantha gave no reaction.

Brooke continued.

“And any lock replacement, security costs, whatever.”

“What do you want?” Rachel asked.

Brooke’s mouth tightened.

“For you not to keep pushing.”

“Pushing what?”

“You know.”

“No. Say it.”

Brooke looked toward her attorney.

He remained silent.

Finally she said, “I want this family to stop treating me like I’m dangerous.”

Rachel stared at her.

“You folded my walker while I was holding it.”

Brooke looked away.

“You packed me out of my own home.”

“I know.”

“You forged authority over my property.”

“I know.”

“And you’re asking me to protect you from the word dangerous?”

Brooke’s eyes filled.

“I wasn’t trying to hurt you.”

“You were willing to hurt me if it made resistance harder.”

Brooke flinched.

That was closer to the truth.

Elaine was not present this time.

Rachel had asked her to stay out of the final decision.

That, too, was part of changing the family.

Brooke pushed the manila folder closer.

“There’s a repayment proposal.”

Rachel did not touch it.

“I’ll review it.”

Relief crossed Brooke’s face.

Rachel continued.

“But I’m still cooperating with whatever formal inquiries come from the forged document.”

The relief vanished.

“You could stop this.”

“No.”

“You’re my sister.”

“Yes.”

Brooke whispered, “Does that mean nothing?”

Rachel thought of the folded walker sliding across marble.

Her suitcase in the hallway.

Her mother believing a lie designed around her loneliness.

“It means I’m not going to punish you beyond what you did.”

Brooke began crying.

Rachel remained seated.

“It also means I’m not going to erase what you did.”

The meeting ended without an embrace.

Without forgiveness.

Without a dramatic collapse.

May you like

Brooke left carrying the same consequences she had brought with her.

For the first time, Rachel did not run after her.
