Chapter 8 - The Debt Brianna Built in Secret
The deeper financial review took four days.
It was uglier than anyone expected.
Brianna’s home décor store had not simply “struggled.” It had collapsed under inventory loans, unpaid vendor balances, and a lawsuit from a landlord over broken lease terms. Grant knew about some of it, but not the scale.
What he did not know was that Brianna had taken a personal bridge loan using future “family real estate security” as part of her liquidity presentation.
Claire explained it bluntly.
“She couldn’t legally pledge Helen’s house without authority. But she could imply that authority was coming.”
Grant stared at the documents like they were in another language.
Megan understood just enough to feel sick.
Brianna had been betting on a future where she controlled Helen’s affairs before anyone checked whether she should.
The fake dementia narrative wasn’t random cruelty.
It was collateral.
When Megan said that aloud, Helen went quiet.
Then she opened a drawer in the guest room and pulled out something she’d been hiding.
A birthday card.
Inside, instead of a note, there was a photocopy of an email printout Brianna had accidentally left near the printer two weeks earlier.
Subject: Capacity Documentation.
The sender was an elder-care placement consultant.
The email included a line that made Megan’s stomach twist:
Once the family agrees she cannot safely remain at home, transition to memory care can happen quickly.
Memory care.
Megan looked up. “She was planning to move you out.”
Helen nodded weakly.
“I thought maybe I was overreacting.”
“No,” Grant said, voice breaking. “You were underreacting.”
That night he cried in Megan’s kitchen.
Not dramatically. Just quietly, with his face in both hands, repeating, “I didn’t see it. I didn’t see it.”
Megan pitied him for about thirty seconds.
Then she remembered Helen’s face shoved into that bowl.
“Seeing it late doesn’t undo what she did,” Megan said.
Grant nodded because he knew it was true.
The next morning, Claire filed for a protective order and notified East Harbor Private Capital that any purported representation by Brianna regarding Helen or the villa was unauthorized and disputed.
By afternoon, Brianna’s attorney requested time to “review the allegations.”
That wording alone told Claire everything she needed to know.
If there had been a harmless explanation, they would have offered it immediately.
Instead, Brianna was buying time.
