Chapter 4 - THE STORY DANIEL TOLD BOTH SISTERS

Sofia had never called Daniel her father in front of me.

Apparently, he encouraged it when I was not around.

The tablet showed months of messages between them. Most appeared harmless: homework reminders, jokes, photographs of the dog Daniel kept promising we would adopt.

Then the tone changed.

Daniel asked Sofia whether Vanessa complained about money. He told her not to discuss “adult paperwork” with me. He promised a swimming pool at the new vacation home if she behaved.

Sofia asked why her mother cried whenever he visited.

Daniel replied:

Because your aunt doesn’t understand us yet.

Vanessa sat across from me in the office of her attorney the next morning. Mom and Dad had refused to attend. They loved her, but the funeral had exhausted their ability to hear another explanation.

“Were you planning to leave Sofia with me?” I asked.

Vanessa stared at the floor.

“Only for a few months.”

“Did you ask me?”

“Daniel said you’d agree after the condo closed.”

“He told me the trip was an investment for our marriage.”

Vanessa looked up.

“He said he was leaving you.”

The hidden truth began to take shape.

Daniel had told Vanessa that I considered her unfit and was preparing to seek custody. He told me Vanessa needed financial guidance and that he was helping her repair her credit.

He showed Vanessa fabricated emails supposedly written by me to a family-law attorney. He warned her that if she did not move Sofia’s funds into an income-producing property, I would use her financial history against her.

He told Sofia that secrecy would keep the family together.

Vanessa had not been tricked into every choice. She knowingly approved false invoices and left the country while her medically fragile daughter remained behind.

But Daniel had constructed a different version of reality for each of us.

“What did you think would happen after the trip?” I asked.

“He said we’d return, tell you together, and Sofia and I would move into your guesthouse until the condo was finished.”

“We don’t have a guesthouse.”

“He said you’d sell your apartment.”

The cruelty of it was almost absurd.

Daniel had promised both sisters a future funded by the same money.

Vanessa pushed a folder across the table. It contained printed messages and a handwritten list of passwords.

“I’m giving the bank everything.”

“Because you’re sorry?”

“Because Daniel called last night and told me to say the withdrawals were your idea.”

I turned to the final message.

Daniel had written:

Emma’s signature is already on the invoices. She can’t expose us without exposing herself.

He had forged my name for more than access to Sofia’s account.

He had created someone to blame.
