Chapter 13 - WHAT ACCOUNTABILITY LOOKED LIKE
Robert and Diane’s separation became practical before it became emotional.
Diane rented a one-bedroom condo in Stratford.
Robert remained at Maple Ridge while the attorneys worked through debt responsibility, retirement income, and whether selling the house would eventually make sense.
No judge instantly assigned blame.
No bank magically erased the line of credit.
They had borrowed money.
It had been spent.
Consequences were mostly arithmetic.
Diane took responsibility for continuing the withdrawals after Robert had explicitly told her to stop providing additional financial support.
She also agreed, through counsel, to stop making any independent transfers from shared assets while the separation proceeded.
Vanessa sold her Trumbull house.
After paying the mortgage and divorce-related debt, she had enough for a smaller townhouse near Lily’s school.
She took extra project-management work from home instead of accepting more help from Diane.
Rachel noticed the change.
She did not turn it into sainthood.
Vanessa still became defensive quickly.
She still had to complete anger-management counseling she voluntarily entered after the breakfast incident.
Most importantly, Emma did not see her until Rachel’s child therapist believed a supervised meeting would be appropriate and Emma agreed.
The first meeting lasted twenty minutes at a public playground.
Vanessa crouched several feet away from Emma.
“I scared you.”
Emma nodded.
“I’m sorry.”
“The pan was loud.”
Vanessa swallowed.
“I know.”
Emma looked at Rachel.
Rachel did not tell her what to say next.
Emma eventually asked, “Can Lily play?”
Vanessa’s face crumpled.
“Yeah.”
Lily ran over.
The girls disappeared toward the swings.
Vanessa stood beside Rachel.
“Does this mean we’re okay?”
“No.”
Vanessa nodded.
“Okay.”

That answer gave Rachel more hope than an apology would have.
Accountability, she was learning, was the willingness to remain after forgiveness failed to arrive on schedule.
