Chapter 5 - THE BABY BECAME EVIDENCE

The court moved quickly because the newborn’s identity, medical care, and legal parentage were disputed.

A judge appointed an independent guardian to represent the baby’s interests. The hospital was instructed not to discharge her until a safe temporary arrangement was approved.

Sierra called the order kidnapping.

My mother called it revenge.

Kevin called a press conference.

He stood outside the hospital beside Sierra, who was seated in a wheelchair holding the baby beneath a pink blanket.

“My wife is using her wealth to take a newborn from the woman who carried and delivered her,” he told reporters.

Sierra cried into the blanket.

“I love my daughter.”

Nobody mentioned the forged consent.

Nobody mentioned the five-million-dollar trust.

Clips spread online before the hearing.

Strangers called me a rich infertile woman trying to purchase motherhood.

Some said DNA should not matter.

Others said carrying a child made Sierra the only real mother.

I did not respond publicly.

Naomi warned that anything I said could be used in court.

More importantly, the baby did not need adults fighting over who loved her most in front of cameras.

She needed protection from people who had built her life on fraud.

The emergency hearing took place in a closed courtroom.

Sierra wore a pale dress and moved slowly from childbirth. Kevin sat beside her, holding her hand where I could see it.

My mother sat directly behind them.

The image was meant to send a message.

This is our family now.

Kevin’s attorney argued that I had abandoned the child by refusing surrogacy years earlier.

“Mrs. Hayes expressed no desire to proceed with a gestational carrier arrangement.”

Naomi stood.

“That is not abandonment. It is refusal.”

“The embryo also belonged to Mr. Hayes.”

“Jointly. He had no authority to transfer it without Lauren’s consent.”

“The documents contain her signature.”

“A forensic examiner has already identified it as a digital copy.”

The judge ordered genetic testing.

Sierra objected.

“She is my baby.”

The judge looked at her.

“Testing will determine genetic parentage. It will not, by itself, determine custody.”

Kevin agreed immediately.

He looked almost proud.

He believed the result would confirm his relationship to the child and strengthen his claim.

My mother gripped Sierra’s shoulder.

Sierra would not look at him.

I noticed.

The test confirmed that I was the baby’s genetic mother.

Kevin was not her genetic father.

The report excluded him completely.

He read the result twice.

“That’s impossible.”

Sierra began crying.

“There must be a mistake.”

Naomi looked toward the clinic’s attorney.

“Was the transferred embryo recorded as belonging to Lauren and Kevin Hayes?”

“Yes.”

“Then either the clinic transferred the wrong embryo, or the records were falsified.”

Kevin turned toward Sierra.

“Whose baby is she?”

Sierra covered her face.

My mother leaned close.

“Don’t answer.”

“Whose baby?” Kevin shouted.

The judge ordered him to sit.

The clinic performed a second review.

The embryo transferred into Sierra had been created during an earlier treatment cycle using my egg and donor sperm.

Kevin and I had chosen the donor after his fertility testing showed severe male-factor infertility.

Kevin had always told me the problem was mine.

He claimed my body had failed every cycle.

The medical records showed something else.

Kevin had almost no viable sperm.

He knew the baby could not be biologically his.

Unless he had never read the embryo report.

“You told me that embryo was destroyed,” I said.

Kevin stared at the clinic documents.

“Sierra told me they used the embryo from our final cycle.”

His confidence collapsed.

Sierra had deceived the man who helped her deceive me.

The baby was biologically mine, conceived with donor sperm, and carried through a transfer I never authorized.

Kevin had claimed fatherhood because he wanted the child’s trust.

Sierra allowed him to believe it because she needed his access to my money.

My mother had known the truth about the donor.

She had manipulated both of them.

The alliance I heard celebrating inside the hospital room had never been a family.

It was three thieves who had told one another different lies.
