Chapter 1 - The Bracelet in the Flowerpot

Harper Nolan stepped into her mother’s kitchen and stopped so hard her shoulder hit the doorway.

Maisie was crying inside the sink.

The sink was dry, lined with a folded blanket, but damp garden soil streaked the fabric under the baby’s legs. Judith stood over her in muddy gloves, breathing hard, as if she had been digging for something and then carried that dirt straight into the house.

Harper crossed the room in two steps and lifted Maisie out.

“Put her back,” Judith said flatly. “I’m not finished checking what they sent home.”

Harper tightened her hold.

Judith’s fist came fast and hard. It caught Harper across the mouth, splitting her lip and snapping her head sideways. Judith lunged again, reaching past her for the baby.

Mallory rushed in from the hall at the exact moment Harper turned her body away to shield Maisie.

“What the hell are you doing to my baby?!”

She drove both hands into Judith’s shoulders and shoved her backward onto the padded bench by the table. The bench slammed the wall.

Judith wiped a smear of dirt from her cheek and looked at Mallory with eerie calm.

“Your baby? I knew eight weeks ago she might not be yours. I just didn’t think you deserved to know yet.”

Everything in the kitchen seemed to stop.

Harper shifted Maisie into Mallory’s arms. The baby was crying hard but looked physically fine. Then Harper saw the torn flowerpot on the floor near the back door, dirt spilling from the roots of Judith’s hydrangea. Something white was tangled beside it.

Two plastic hospital bracelets.

Same birth date.

Different baby names.

Harper picked them up. One read MAISIE NOLAN.

The other read RUBY KINCAID.

Then she saw the discharge signature line printed beneath the second band.

JUDITH NOLAN.

Harper slowly looked up.

“Mom... why is your signature on the other baby’s discharge bracelet?”

Judith’s face emptied.

Across the kitchen, Mallory pulled Maisie tighter against her chest.

Judith’s eyes moved toward the back door.

And for the first time in her life, Harper saw her mother look trapped.
