Chapter 1 - The Sentence That Silenced My Wedding

My sister destroyed my wedding cake before I had even finished taking photographs beside it.

Paige stormed into the reception hall, swept champagne glasses and white flower arrangements off the table, then shoved the cake sideways.

It crashed onto the floor.

Guests jumped back.

Molly froze beside me.

Paige pointed straight at my face.

“A second wedding? You couldn’t even keep your first husband.”

I felt Nathan move toward me.

I stopped him with one hand.

Then Paige grabbed my bouquet.

She ripped it apart and threw the flowers against my wedding dress.

“Even your daughter watched one man walk out. Let’s see how long this guy lasts.”

That was the moment I lost control.

Not because she insulted me.

Because Molly heard it.

I grabbed Paige’s arm and slapped her hard across the face.

“Humiliate me all you want. But keep my daughter out of this.”

Nathan immediately stepped beside me.

Paige touched her cheek.

Then she smiled.

That smug little smile had followed me through half my life.

She thought I was embarrassed.

She thought I would protect the family again.

So I stepped closer.

My voice became completely calm.

“Careful, Paige. Don’t think I don’t know who my ex-husband was bedding that caused our marriage to end.”

Everything stopped.

Paige’s smile vanished.

Molly looked at me, confused.

Nathan slowly turned toward Paige.

Around us, people stopped pretending not to listen.

Paige went white.

I watched the fear appear in her eyes.

Not anger.

Fear.

Because for three years, my younger sister had relied on one thing.

May you like

My silence.

And for the first time, she realized I might finally be done protecting her.
