Chapter 1 - THE ONE THEY DIDN’T COME BACK FOR

Mark shoved Ellie so hard her shoulder struck the hallway wall.
“Daddy!”
Smoke rolled across the ceiling as he pulled eight-year-old Noah toward the rear escape window.
Ellie stumbled after them.
“Wait for me. Please.”
Her mother was already climbing through the opening.
Caroline looked straight at Ellie.
Not past her.
Not through the smoke.
At her.
“We can only choose one to save.”
Then she disappeared outside with Noah.
For several seconds, Ellie stood alone in the burning hallway of their Scarsdale home.
She stopped calling for them.
The smoke was getting thicker.
She remembered the laundry room had an exterior door and turned toward the stairs.
That was when she saw the deep-burgundy emergency bag beside the banister.
Her father had made the family practice with it twice.
Ellie grabbed it.
Three respirator masks were inside.
Each plastic pouch had a name written in Caroline’s neat handwriting.
MARK.
CAROLINE.
NOAH.
There was no fourth mask.
Ellie stared at them until another cough forced her to move.
Footsteps suddenly pounded behind her.
“Ellie!”
Her heart jumped.
Dad came back.
She turned toward him.
Mark rushed through the smoke.
Then ran straight past her.
He reached for the burgundy bag.
“Give me that. Noah needs it.”
Ellie hugged it against herself.
Something inside her changed.
Not because he had rescued Noah first.
Because he had come back into a burning house and still hadn't come back for her.
“I know now,” she cried. “Stop lying to me, Daddy!”
Mark froze.
Ellie backed toward the laundry room.
“You never planned to save me.”
For the first time, fear crossed her father’s face.
Not fear of the flames.
Fear of what she had understood.
Ellie shoved open the laundry door and stumbled into freezing November air.
A firefighter reached her before she collapsed on the wet lawn.
From the front yard, neighbors watched Mark carrying Noah toward an ambulance while Caroline wrapped a blanket around her son.
Neither parent came to Ellie.
Then Noah saw his sister being placed on a stretcher.
He began screaming.
“Ellie!”
Caroline grabbed him.
Noah fought her.

And through tears, he shouted something none of the adults understood yet.
“I didn't mean to do it again.”
