Chapter 6 - WHAT SILENCE COST

By Tuesday, Claire’s carefully balanced life had begun coming apart.

Her hospital job remained secure, but losing the hardware-store income meant losing the money she used for three overnight daycare shifts each month.

Her parents had not simply helped with Maisie.

They had become part of the arithmetic that made single motherhood possible.

Lucas offered to cover daycare temporarily.

Claire refused.

“We’re not even married.”

“So?”

“So I don’t want to replace dependence on my parents with dependence on you.”

“That isn’t what I’m offering.”

“It’s what it becomes if I can’t pay you back.”

Lucas put down his fork.

Maisie was asleep upstairs.

Neither of them had eaten much.

“You don’t have to turn every kind thing into a debt.”

Claire leaned back.

“And you don’t get to decide what dependence feels like for me.”

He looked hurt.

She knew she had aimed for that.

She hated that she had.

“I’m sorry.”

Lucas rubbed his jaw.

“Are you?”

“Yes.”

“Because I’m not the person who put her in that dumpster.”

“I know.”

“But I keep getting punished like I’m standing in for them.”

Claire looked away.

He was right.

That made her angrier.

Her phone buzzed.

Tessa.

Claire almost ignored it.

Then she answered.

“What?”

“I need you not to tell Naomi about Brooke yet.”

Claire stood from the table.

“Excuse me?”

“My ex has been looking for a reason to change custody.”

“Tessa, this isn’t about you.”

“It is about my kid.”

“Your kid may have been drugged repeatedly.”

“And if children services thinks I knowingly allowed it, what do you think happens?”

“They investigate.”

“Exactly.”

“What are you asking me to do?”

“Give me forty-eight hours.”

“For what?”

“To talk to Eric. To get ahead of it.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“You’re still managing appearances.”

“I’m trying not to lose my daughter.”

“You were worried about losing her Saturday too, weren’t you?”

Tessa went quiet.

Claire heard it.

The connection.

“Was that why you didn’t call 911?”

“I told Mom to.”

“That’s not the question.”

“I froze.”

“No. You calculated.”

Tessa’s breath caught.

Claire continued.

“You thought if an ambulance showed up while Brooke was there, Eric might hear about the medicine.”

“That wasn’t the only reason.”

“What was the other reason?”

“Dad.”

“What about him?”

“He said if I called anyone, he’d tell Eric I’d been letting Mom medicate Brooke for years.”

Claire sat down slowly.

Warren hadn’t merely relied on Tessa’s guilt.

He had used it.

Lucas watched Claire’s face.

“What?”

Claire put the call on speaker.

“Tessa, say that again.”

Tessa refused.

Then she began crying.

“I can’t do this.”

“You already did.”

“I’m done talking until I have a lawyer.”

The call ended.

Claire looked at Lucas.

May you like

For the first time since the dumpster, someone inside the family had stopped cooperating completely.

And the person who knew the most was now terrified not of Warren’s anger, but of what telling the truth might cost her own child.
