Chapter 14 - THE FIRST TIME HELEN FORGOT SOMETHING IMPORTANTEighteen months after the kennel, Helen missed a cardiology appointment.

Completely.
Not late.
Not confused about the time.
Forgot.
When the office called, panic hit harder than embarrassment.
She sat in the car afterward staring at the steering wheel.
This was what Ashley had warned about.
This was what Helen feared everyone would use.
She called Karen first.
Then Daniel.
Then, after fifteen minutes, Ashley.
Her daughter answered cautiously.
“Mom?”
“I forgot an appointment.”
Silence.
Helen almost regretted calling.
Then Ashley said:
“Okay.”
That was all.
Not:
I told you.
Not:
You need me.
Not:
This proves you shouldn’t live alone.
Just okay.
Helen started crying.
Ashley heard.
“What do you need?”
The question mattered more than any medical advice.
“I don’t know yet.”
“Okay.”
Another pause.
“Do you want me to come over?”
Helen thought.
“No.”
“Okay.”
No argument.
Helen scheduled a new appointment herself.
Karen helped her add automatic reminders.
Daniel suggested a shared calendar.
Helen agreed.
Ashley did not ask for access.
That was the first moment Helen wondered whether trust might someday grow back.
Not return.
Grow.
Something new.
Later that week, Helen invited Ashley for coffee at Diane’s house.
Neutral place.
Ashley arrived carrying nothing.
No paperwork.
No groceries.
No “help.”
They drank coffee.
Talked about work.
Weather.
Daniel’s children.
Then Ashley asked:
“Are you scared?”
Helen considered lying.
“Yes.”
“Me too.”
Helen nodded.
There was the relationship underneath the property fight.
Two women terrified of Helen getting older.
One tried to control the fear.
The other tried to deny it.
Both had failed.

Now perhaps they could do something harder.
Acknowledge it.
