Chapter 14 - The Birthday Gift I Almost Bought

The following spring, Emma turned ten.

For years, I had treated her birthday almost like a second parenting obligation.

Big gifts.

Activity fees.

Money tucked into cards because Ashley always seemed short.

This time I bought nothing immediately.

I asked Ben what Emma actually needed.

He laughed.

“Apparently every child in Connecticut needs roller skates now.”

Then he became serious.

“She doesn’t need another expensive aunt. She needs an aunt who means what she says.”

That sentence stayed with me.

Ashley invited me to Emma’s small birthday gathering at a local art studio.

Noah was invited separately.

I told him he could decide.

He said no.

“I’m not ready.”

I called Ashley before the party.

“Noah won’t be there.”

There was a pause.

A year earlier, she would have accused me of poisoning him against Emma.

This time she said, “Okay.”

That one word was the most convincing evidence of change she had given me.

At the studio, Emma painted a ceramic fox and barely looked at the gift table.

I brought a sketchbook and markers.

No iPad.

No camp tuition.

No hidden financial rescue.

When she opened them, she looked surprised.

Then she hugged me carefully.

“I’m sorry about Noah’s cake.”

“I know.”

“Do you hate me?”

“No.”

“Does he?”

“You’d have to ask him someday, if he wants to talk.”

She nodded.

Ashley watched from across the room.

After the guests left, she handed me a check.

It covered the last portion of Noah’s medical deductible that insurance had not reimbursed.

“You don’t owe me this under the settlement,” I said.

“I know.”

“Then why?”

“Because I spent my whole life letting somebody else finish the bill.”

I took it.

Not because I needed the money.

Because refusing would have stolen a consequence she had finally chosen herself.

Outside the studio, Ashley asked whether I would ever pay for Emma’s dance again.

I looked at her.

Then she smiled faintly.

“Kidding.”

It was not a good joke.

But for the first time, she recognized that before I had to explain it.
