Chapter 12 - WHEN VANESSA LEARNED DIANE LIED TO HER

Vanessa insisted on reading Emily’s letter.

I agreed in counseling.

She read slowly.

When she finished, she looked furious.

Not at me.

At Diane.

“She told me Emily wanted me around.”

I said nothing.

“She said Emily thought Mason needed to get used to me.”

“I know.”

“She told me Emily asked her to make sure you weren’t alone.”

That was new.

“Emily never wrote that.”

Vanessa stared at the pages.

For years, she had interpreted Emily’s discomfort as jealousy.

Because Diane had told her to.

The counselor asked, “Does learning this change how you see what happened with Mason?”

Vanessa took a long time.

“Yes.”

Hope moved through me despite everything.

Then she ruined it.

“But I still think some distance from Mason would help us rebuild.”

I closed my eyes.

The counselor leaned forward.

“What kind of distance?”

“Maybe a few nights a week with Diane.”

Even after learning Diane had manipulated both women.

Even after the dinner.

Even after Mason’s fear.

Vanessa’s solution was still to relocate the child.

I looked at her.

“Do you hear yourself?”

“He hates me.”

“He’s seven.”

“I can’t live forever in a house where I’m treated like an intruder.”

“Then the adult leaves.”

Her face tightened.

Not the child.

That was the boundary I finally understood.

Vanessa wiped her eyes.

“You’d end our marriage over this?”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“Our marriage may end because you still think my son has to become smaller for you to feel secure.”

She stared at me.

For the first time, there was no Diane between us.

No Emily.

No misunderstanding.

May you like

Just Vanessa’s own choice.

And mine.
