Chapter 6 - WHAT SILENCE HAD COST THEM

Helen did not speak to Derek for two days.
She also barely spoke to Rachel.
Shame made her colder than anger ever had.
Rachel recognized it because she had inherited the same instinct.
At work, she buried herself in commercial property reports until nearly nine every night.
At home, she kept thinking about dinner.
Not Mason spitting on her plate.
Helen saying, Don’t make a scene.
Rachel finally understood that the sentence had governed their family for years.
Don’t embarrass your sister.
Don’t upset Dad.
Don’t challenge Derek during Christmas.
Don’t discuss money when Mason is around.
Don’t make a scene.
Keeping peace had become more important than knowing what was true.
On Thursday, Laura called.
“Derek knows I gave you the papers.”
“How?”
“He went through my desk.”
Rachel sat upright.
“Are you okay?”
“I’m fine.”
“Laura.”
“He didn’t touch me.”
Rachel waited.
Laura exhaled.
“He just gets… loud.”
“Mason there?”
“Yes.”
Rachel rubbed her forehead.
“I’m not telling you what to do with your marriage.”
“I know.”
“But separate your money.”
Laura laughed without humor.
“You make everything sound easy.”
“No. I make it sound necessary.”
That evening Helen finally called.
“I asked Derek for an accounting.”
“What did he say?”
“That I’m humiliating him after everything he’s done.”
Rachel almost smiled.
The irony would have been funny in another family.
“He also said you’re trying to turn me against him.”
“I’m trying to make sure you can afford your house.”
Helen’s voice sharpened.
“And you made that harder when you canceled the payment.”
There it was.
Rachel closed her eyes.
“You’re right.”
Helen became quiet.
“I should have warned you before canceling it,” Rachel continued. “I was furious. I wanted one clean line I could control.”
“So you’ll restart it?”
“No.”
Helen’s silence lengthened.
“But I’ll make sure you have time to figure out what comes next.”
“You’re really going to let me lose this house?”
“No, Mom. I’m going to stop being the secret reason you can afford it.”
Helen hung up.
An hour later Rachel received a text from Mason.
Grandma says you’re taking her house away because you hate Dad.
Rachel stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
Dad says rich people always pretend money makes them right.
Rachel did not answer.
Because for the first time she understood something important.

Mason’s cruelty had not appeared by accident.
He had been listening.
