Chapter 1 - CRAWL FOR IT

Emma Dawson was already on the hardwood floor when Daniel saw his mother kick the orange prescription bottle away from her.

He saw it through his phone.

Three blocks from home.

Daniel had stepped out to the pharmacy for infant gas drops and a heating pad. Before leaving, he had opened the nursery-camera app he and Emma had installed two days earlier after she complained that things in the bedroom kept being moved whenever Vivian visited.

Emma knew about the camera.

Vivian did not.

Daniel expected to see his wife sleeping.

Instead, his mother stood over her in a fitted red evening gown with newborn Oliver screaming against her shoulder.

Emma, eleven days postpartum, was on one knee in a white satin nightgown, pale and shaking.

Crushed medication lay across the floor.

Vivian used the toe of her heel to kick the bottle farther away.

“Crawl for it first. Weak mothers don’t get to hold their babies.”

Daniel stopped walking.

For a second his brain refused to translate what he was seeing.

Emma reached toward her medication.

Then toward Oliver.

Vivian moved the baby farther from her.

Emma tried to rise.

Vivian shoved her shoulder.

Emma went back down.

“Clean every pill, then maybe you can touch my grandson.”

Daniel ran.

He crossed the three blocks faster than he remembered crossing anything in his life.

By the time he reached the double doors of the master bedroom, Emma was braced on one hand, trying to push herself upright again.

Vivian looked annoyed rather than frightened.

She still held Oliver.

Daniel crossed the room.

He took his son safely from Vivian’s arms, turned his body between the women, and knocked Vivian’s reaching hand aside.

“Stay away from my wife. You’re done.”

Vivian stared at him.

“Daniel, she is out of control.”

Emma looked up from the floor.

Daniel had never seen her look so exhausted.

Not after thirty hours of labor.

Not after the emergency surgery.

Not when breastfeeding had become difficult and she cried because she thought she was failing Oliver.

Daniel pulled out his phone.

The camera recording was still open.

Vivian saw the interface.

Her expression changed.

“You recorded me?”

“I saw you.”

“That medication is making her unstable.”

Emma whispered, “She took it from me.”

Vivian snapped, “She doesn’t know what she’s saying.”

Daniel tapped the call he had made while running.

His sister answered through the speaker.

“Natalie.”

A pause.

Then Natalie’s voice came through.

“Daniel?”

He could barely speak.

“I need you to tell me something about Mom.”

Vivian moved toward him.

Daniel stepped back.

Natalie heard Emma crying.

“What happened?”

Daniel looked at the pills scattered across the floor.

“Mom took Emma’s medication. She made her crawl for it.”

Nothing came through the phone for several seconds.

Then Natalie’s breathing changed.

“Daniel…”

Vivian went white.

Natalie said:

“She used to do this to me too.”

Vivian lunged for the phone.

Daniel jerked it out of reach.

Emma looked from Vivian to her husband.

“What does she mean?”

Daniel had no answer.

But he knew one thing immediately.

His sister had left their family at twenty-three after everyone agreed she had developed a dangerous problem with prescription pain medication.

Daniel had believed that story for fourteen years.

And now he was staring at his mother standing over another weakened woman beside another bottle of pills.
