Chapter 1 - THE HANDS ON THE RAIL

Rachel Mercer felt Evelyn’s hands hit both shoulders before she understood what was happening.
One brutal shove.
Her back struck the rooftop railing.
Then the city vanished beneath her.
Rachel caught the top bar with both hands.
Metal tore across her palms.
“MICHAEL! HELP ME!”
Above her, Evelyn leaned over the railing.
No panic.
No apology.
Just sixty-one years of controlled anger staring down at her.
“You should’ve stayed out of my business.”
Rachel’s arms shook.
“Michael! Your mother pushed me!”
Footsteps pounded from inside the luxury apartment.
The terrace door burst open.
Its metal edge slammed into Evelyn’s shoulder.
Michael had no time to stop it.
His mother stumbled backward and disappeared from sight.
A scream rose from somewhere below.
Then silence.
Michael froze.
“Mom?”
Rachel’s fingers slipped.
“Michael!”
He dropped beside the railing and caught both her forearms.
“Jesus—Rachel, hold on.”
He pulled.
Rachel rose inches at a time.
“What happened?”
“She tried to throw me off.”
“What?”
“Because I found out what she did to your first wife.”
Michael stopped pulling for half a second.
Rachel saw it.
Not disbelief.
Recognition.
“Michael!”
He tightened his grip again.
“Hold on.”
By the time he dragged Rachel back over the railing, her knees barely held her.
He wrapped both arms around her.
Then he looked toward the empty section of terrace.
“Mom?”
They found Evelyn one level below.
She had landed on a narrow maintenance terrace built around the penthouse mechanical level.
Alive.
Conscious.
Her wrist was bent at an unnatural angle, and she was screaming that she couldn’t move her left leg.
Michael called 911.
Rachel stayed several feet away.
Her hands were bleeding.
Her entire body shook.
Still, her mind remained fixed on something Evelyn had said before the shove.
Rachel had confronted her with one name.
Northline Property Services.
A vendor that had received hundreds of thousands of dollars from Mercer Residential Management nearly ten years earlier.
The same period when Michael’s first marriage suddenly collapsed.
Evelyn had denied knowing anything about it.
Rachel had mentioned Lauren.
Michael’s first wife.
That was when Evelyn’s face changed.
Then came the shove.
An hour later, Michael sat beside Rachel in the emergency department while doctors treated her scraped palms.
Evelyn was being evaluated elsewhere.
Michael hadn’t spoken for several minutes.
Finally he asked, “What exactly did you find?”
Rachel looked at him.
“Before I tell you, I need you to answer something.”
“What?”
“When Lauren left you, did she ever accuse your mother of hiding something?”
Michael’s face tightened.
“She accused Mom of a lot of things.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
He looked away.
Rachel’s stomach dropped.
“Michael.”
He swallowed.
“Yes.”
Rachel went still.
“What did she say?”
Michael stared at the floor.
“That my mother had destroyed her life to protect me.”
Rachel felt colder than she had hanging from the railing.
“And you never told me?”
“I thought Lauren was trying to hurt us.”
“Why?”
“Because my mother told me she was.”
Rachel looked through the emergency-room doors toward the corridor where Evelyn had disappeared.

The rooftop hadn’t created the family crisis.
It had only exposed how long Michael had been living inside one.
