Chapter 12 - The Dinner They Should Have Had Months Earlier

The final confrontation happened at the same dining table where Evelyn had torn Claire from the wedding photograph.

Daniel chose the location.

Not because he wanted revenge.

Because he wanted his parents to sit with what they had done.

Claire came with him.

Natalie came too.

Robert looked twenty years older than he had on the anniversary night.

Evelyn looked furious.

“Why is she here?”

She meant Natalie.

Natalie removed her coat.

“Because you used my name to attack Claire.”

Evelyn scoffed.

“I invited you because I always believed you belonged with Daniel.”

“No.”

Natalie remained standing.

“You invited me because you thought I would help restore your influence over him.”

Robert looked down.

Evelyn turned to Daniel.

“You’re going to let her speak to me like this?”

Daniel almost smiled.

“That question is the entire problem.”

Claire watched Evelyn absorb that.

Robert finally spoke.

“I was trying to save the company.”

Daniel faced him.

“By promising my cooperation before asking me?”

“I believed you would understand once you saw the full situation.”

“You never showed me the full situation.”

“Because you were already pulling away.”

“From what?”

Robert looked at Claire.

Daniel noticed.

“Don’t.”

Robert looked back at his son.

“From me.”

The honesty changed the room.

Robert admitted that Daniel’s increasing independence frightened him.

Every request for outside advice felt like distrust.

Every boundary felt like rejection.

When Daniel refused the guarantee, Robert saw not prudent caution but proof he was losing the son who was supposed to continue his life’s work.

Evelyn interrupted.

“And Claire encouraged every bit of it.”

Claire finally spoke.

“Yes.”

Evelyn stared at her.

Claire continued.

“I encouraged my husband to understand financial commitments before signing them.”

“You made him suspicious.”

“No. I made him ask questions.”

Evelyn looked toward Robert.

“You see?”

Robert did not support her this time.

“Evelyn.”

She stopped.

Robert’s voice was tired.

“She wasn’t wrong.”

Evelyn looked genuinely betrayed.

That was when Claire understood what Evelyn had actually been protecting.

Not merely the company.

Not merely status.

A marriage built around being Robert’s unquestioned ally.

If Robert admitted Claire had been right, Evelyn’s entire justification collapsed.

Evelyn pushed back from the table.

“So this is it? Everyone turns on me?”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

May you like

He looked at the chair beside him.

“This is everyone finally choosing for themselves.”
