Chapter 12 - MARCUS FINALLY SAID WHAT HE WAS TOO COWARDLY TO ADMITOur divorce mediation happened fifteen months after I dropped my wedding ring into Marcus’s palm.

He still had both rings.

Mine.

His signet.

He brought them in a small envelope.

“I didn’t know if you wanted yours.”

“I don’t.”

He nodded.

Then I asked:

“Why did you let your mother do it?”

He started with explanations.

Childhood.

Discipline.

Stress.

Business.

I stopped him.

“Why?”

Marcus stared at the table.

“Because confronting her cost me more than letting Sophie absorb it.”

Silence.

There.

The sentence I needed.

He continued.

“I told myself Sophie would forget.”

I felt sick.

“And me?”

“I thought if you never saw it, we could keep functioning.”

“So your plan was for our daughter to carry what you didn’t want me to know.”

“Yes.”

No excuse.

Then:

“I also wanted Mom’s structure to work.”

“Why?”

“Because then you would be wrong.”

That surprised me.

“About what?”

“That Sophie needed softness.”

He cried.

“I thought if Mom could make her tougher, then maybe I wasn’t becoming my mother by agreeing with some of her methods.”

He had been splitting himself too.

Love Diane.

Reject Diane.

Need Diane.

Resent Diane.

Rather than resolve that conflict, he pushed it onto Sophie.

Then I asked about the custody journal.

“Would you actually have used it against me?”

Marcus hesitated.

“Yes.”

Honest.

“Even knowing some entries came after she had been humiliated?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I was afraid you’d take her.”

I stared at him.

“You were so afraid I’d take Sophie that you helped create the very evidence showing she needed protection from your side of the family.”

He closed his eyes.

“I know.”

That was the tragedy.
