Chapter 1 - THE PHONE UNDER CELESTE’S BED

My mother-in-law threw a glass perfume bottle at my face and ordered me to clean up the mess before the dinner guests arrived.

The bottle missed my eye by less than an inch.

It struck the edge of Celeste Weller’s vanity, shattered, and sent a small piece of glass across my cheek.

I touched my face.

When I pulled my fingers away, there was a thin streak of blood.

Celeste did not apologize.

She stood beside the vanity in her striped cardigan and looked at the broken crystal scattered across the pale carpet.

“Clean it up before anyone sees you.”

My husband appeared in the bedroom doorway.

Aaron.

Thirty-five.

The man who had kissed me that morning before work.

The man who had been sleeping beside me for six years.

He looked at my cheek.

Then at his mother.

Then at the floor.

“Aaron?”

He stepped inside.

For one foolish second, I expected him to ask whether I was hurt.

Instead he pointed toward the broken perfume bottle.

“Five minutes. Then fix your face.”

Something inside me became very still.

Celeste handed me a small cleaning basket.

Dustpan.

Towels.

Trash bag.

Prepared.

That detail would matter later.

I knelt.

Not because they had the right to order me around.

Because downstairs, six people were supposed to arrive for dinner.

Six people Aaron had personally insisted we invite.

And three days earlier, I had found something inside his family company that made me suspicious enough not to give him the confrontation he seemed to want.

I gathered the largest pieces of glass.

Aaron stepped closer.

“Faster.”

I stood halfway.

“Don't.”

His hand closed around my upper arm.

Hard.

He forced me one step toward the vanity.

I twisted away.

My hip hit the edge of the dresser, but I kept my balance.

Aaron released me.

Attack over.

No second grab.

No shouting.

That frightened me more.

It felt controlled.

Planned.

I crouched again.

A shard had slid beneath the bed.

I reached for it.

My fingers found something smooth instead.

A phone.

Plain gray case.

Older model.

Not mine.

Not Celeste’s regular phone.

I pulled it halfway out.

The screen woke.

Aaron’s photograph appeared.

INCOMING CALL — AARON.

My husband was standing three feet behind me.

He looked down.

His face changed.

I understood immediately.

The phone belonged to someone else.

And Aaron knew exactly why it was hidden there.

I turned the screen toward him.

“What exactly were you planning tonight?”

He moved toward me.

The bedroom door opened.

Lauren Pierce stood there in a black dinner dress, one hand still on the doorknob.

She had arrived early.

Her eyes went first to my cheek.

Then to the broken perfume bottle.

Then to Aaron.

Then to Celeste.

“Aaron…”

Her voice changed.

“What did you do to her?”

Celeste looked beneath the bed.

The phone was gone.

For the first time all evening, she looked frightened.

I slipped the gray phone between two towels in the cleaning basket.

It vibrated once.

Aaron heard it.

So did Lauren.

Nobody spoke.

Then a notification lit through the fabric.

Only a few words were visible.

DINNER SIX

7:45 — Lauren

7:55 — Malcolm

8:05 — Denise

I stared at the screen.

Lauren whispered:

“What is Dinner Six?”

May you like

Aaron’s face went white.

And that was when I realized the six dinner invitations were not simply a guest list.
