Chapter 1 - THE GLASSES IN THE SOUP

Claire Whitmore shoved Evelyn forward by the shoulder.
Her mother-in-law hit the birthday cake face-first.
Pink frosting collapsed beneath her.
The cake stand scraped violently across the banquet table while relatives jerked backward in their chairs.
Two-year-old Lily was crying beside the table with her stuffed rabbit pressed against her chest.
Thirty seconds earlier, Evelyn had leaned over the toddler, called her “defective,” then struck her across the side of the face when Lily tried to pull away.
That was the moment Claire stopped thinking about being polite.
Now Evelyn lifted her frosting-covered face in disbelief.
“You psycho.”
Claire turned immediately toward Lily.
Before she reached her daughter, Mark stood.
“Apologize to my mother right now. You’re the one ruining this family.”
Claire looked at her husband.
He had watched everything.
He had watched his mother humiliate Lily.
Watched Lily cry.
Watched Evelyn put a hand on their child.
And his first demand was that Claire apologize.
Mark reached toward her.
Claire slapped him.
Once.
Hard enough that his glasses flew from his face and landed directly in a bowl of turkey soup.
Nobody laughed.
Mark staggered against his chair.
Claire dropped beside Lily.
“Come here, baby.”
She gave Lily the stuffed rabbit and lifted her into her arms.
Then she looked at Mark.
“You watched your own daughter cry and still chose your mother. That tells me exactly what kind of father you are.”
Someone near the end of the table raised a phone.
Anna Brooks, Mark’s cousin.
She had been recording Lily’s birthday candles when the argument started.
The screen was still active.
Mark saw it.
Fear replaced his anger.
Claire noticed.
“What?”
Mark looked toward Anna.
“Turn that off.”
Anna didn’t.
Mark’s mouth moved before his judgment caught up.
“She promised me she’d only say it,” he snapped. “She said she wouldn’t actually touch her.”
Claire froze.
Evelyn stopped wiping frosting from her face.
Anna lowered the phone slightly.
“What did you just say?”
Mark’s face emptied.
Claire tightened Lily against her chest.
“You knew?”
“No.”
“You just said you knew.”
“I knew Mom was going to confront you.”
“About my two-year-old?”
“Claire—”
“You knew what she planned to say?”
Mark reached for Anna’s phone.
She stepped backward.
Claire watched the panic in his face.
Not embarrassment.
Panic.
Anna looked down at the recording timer.
Then back at Mark.
“I got that.”
Mark lunged across the table.
Claire turned Lily away.
Two relatives caught Mark before he reached Anna.
The room finally became quiet.
Claire looked at the man she had been married to for nine years.
The father of the crying child in her arms.
“What exactly did you think was going to happen tonight?”
Mark didn’t answer.
But Evelyn did.
“He was trying to protect Lily.”
Claire stared at her.
From what?
Evelyn’s eyes flicked toward Mark.
And Claire understood that the cruelty at the birthday party had not started when Evelyn insulted a toddler.
Somebody had planned for Claire to be confronted.
May you like
Somebody had expected a reaction.
And Mark’s accidental confession told her he had known before any of it happened.
