Chapter 6 - ROBERT ALMOST DEFENDED HIS SON AGAIN

Robert watched the clip in Malcolm's office.

He watched it twice.

Then he said:

“There could be context.”

I stared at him.

Diane.

Nathan.

A revoked power of attorney.

Three hundred thousand dollars already spent.

And Robert still reached for context.

I understood something about him then.

Nathan's habit of making family problems disappear had not started with Diane.

Robert had participated too.

Nathan was the only child who stayed in Raleigh.

His older sister lived in Charlotte.

His younger brother moved to Denver.

Nathan joined Robert's small construction business after college.

When Robert sold that company, Nathan used his share to start Mercer Residential Ventures.

Robert introduced investors.

Guaranteed one early loan.

Opened doors.

Every time Nathan succeeded, Robert felt vindicated.

Every time he struggled, Robert quietly helped.

“You think I'm trying to turn you against him,” I said.

Robert rubbed his face.

“I think he's scared.”

“So am I.”

That stopped him.

I continued.

“I found a camera in my bathroom.”

He looked down.

“Your wife came to my house and checked whether it was still there.”

“Elena—”

“Your son asked whether I moved it.”

Robert's face changed.

“I didn't know that.”

“No.”

I leaned forward.

“You didn't know because everyone in this family waits until a problem becomes unbearable before saying it out loud.”

He looked hurt.

Good.

I was tired of protecting people from accurate sentences.

Still, his hesitation had a consequence.

I began wondering whether I was fighting harder for Robert's property than Robert himself wanted.

That was dangerous.

I told Malcolm I would not make decisions for his client.

If Robert wanted to ratify Nathan's transaction after receiving independent advice, that was his choice.

I hated saying it.

It was still true.

Robert spent two days thinking.

Then he told Malcolm:

“No sale.”

Not because of me.

Because Nathan used revoked authority.

“If I give him the land now,” Robert said, “then I teach him the lie worked.”

That was the first time he named it.

Nathan reacted badly.

He stopped speaking to his father.

He also stopped sleeping at home.

He told me he needed space.

I did not chase him.

Diane began calling relatives.

Elena is manipulating Robert.

Elena wants Nathan's company to fail.

Elena thinks she knows business because she reads insurance contracts.

One aunt actually called to ask whether Robert was mentally declining.

“Ask Robert.”

“She said you're always with him now.”

“I've seen him twice this month.”

The smear campaign had begun.

Then I discovered what Diane intended to use as proof.

The forensic consultant recovered a file-transfer log from the hidden camera.

Someone had exported three bathroom clips to removable storage before I found the device.

One clip showed me crying on the bathroom floor after a panic attack.

Another showed me taking a prescribed anti-anxiety tablet.

The third showed me on the phone with Malcolm discussing Robert's documents.

I remembered the day.

I had gone into the bathroom because Nathan was home and I did not want him hearing the call.

That private choice had been captured.

Diane now possessed footage that could be edited into a story:

Elena takes pills.

Elena cries.

Elena secretly discusses Robert's finances.

Unstable daughter-in-law.

Manipulative daughter-in-law.

Exactly the person whose warnings Robert should ignore.

I sat in Caroline's office feeling physically sick.

“She was going to use my bathroom to destroy my credibility.”

“Possibly.”

“Don't lawyer me.”

Caroline softened.

“Yes.”

I covered my face.

The camera had never been about sex.

In some ways, that made it worse.

Diane did not want my body.

She wanted a version of me she could weaponize.

Then Caroline asked the question I had been avoiding.

“What are you going to do about Nathan?”

I lowered my hands.

“I don't know.”

May you like

But I did know one thing.

I was no longer living in a house where my husband could come and go while I wondered whether he helped his mother watch me.
