Chapter 8 - THE HOSPITAL WAS WHERE HE LOST CONTROL

Julian was served with divorce papers on a Tuesday.

Victoria received notice of my request for a protective order the same afternoon.

By Wednesday morning, both were at Froedtert.

I had returned for an orthopedic follow-up.

My cast remained on.

My knee brace remained locked at a limited angle.

Rachel had pushed me through the lobby in a wheelchair because walking from the parking structure still exhausted me.

Officer Mason was already at the hospital to take supplemental photographs of my injuries for the investigation.

That coincidence was less dramatic than it sounds.

We had scheduled the meeting there because I was already coming.

Julian apparently knew my appointment time from an insurance notification still tied to our joint plan.

He crossed the lobby before I could react.

“You filed?”

Officer Mason stepped between us.

“Mr. Fleming, back up.”

Julian ignored him.

“You filed for divorce without talking to me?”

“I’ve talked to you for ten years.”

“This is because of my mother?”

“This is because of you.”

His face changed.

He lunged around Mason.

His hand caught my sling.

Pain tore through my shoulder as my wheelchair jerked sideways.

“Should’ve given Mom the house.”

I cried out.

Officer Mason ripped his hand away and forced Julian backward.

“Hands behind your back.”

“I barely touched her.”

“You’re done.”

Metal clicked.

Julian stopped struggling only long enough to realize he was actually being handcuffed.

Victoria rushed toward me.

“You did this.”

“No.”

“You are destroying my son.”

She grabbed the divorce papers from my lap.

I caught them with my right hand.

“Let go.”

“That house is ours.”

She pulled.

I held on.

Officer Mason ordered her to step back.

She ignored him.

I yanked the papers free.

Then I reached into the taupe document envelope Rachel had been carrying for me.

Thomas had sent a certified copy of Article Nine and the trust ownership schedule that morning.

I slapped it onto the edge of the empty hospital bed beside us.

“Grandpa protected it.”

Victoria stopped.

Her eyes found the trust heading.

Then the clause.

Julian, still held by Officer Mason, stared at the page.

“What does that mean?”

I turned it toward them.

“It means I cannot pledge the house for your debts.”

Julian’s face tightened.

“I know what the trust says.”

“I know you do.”

Victoria looked at him.

That exchange mattered.

She had apparently expected him to deny it.

I continued.

“It also means Thomas has to review any attempt to pressure me into a transfer.”

Victoria took a step back.

Officer Mason moved between us.

I tapped the ownership schedule.

“And it means Great Lakes knows the property you listed as mine was never available to you.”

Julian’s anger changed.

Not into surprise.

Panic.

Victoria whispered, “You told me the bank only needed proof of value.”

Julian snapped, “Stop talking.”

Officer Mason tightened his grip.

Victoria stared at her son.

“You said we could fix the paperwork afterward.”

“Mom.”

“You said Nora would sign.”

“Shut up.”

I looked from one to the other.

A nurse near the desk had stopped pretending not to listen.

Officer Mason said, “Ms. Fleming, I need you to step away from Dr.—”

“Nora,” I corrected automatically. “I’m not a doctor.”

Stress did strange things.

Mason nodded.

“Ms. Fleming, step back.”

Victoria did.

Julian looked at me.

For the first time, I understood something the money records had not yet shown.

Victoria had been desperate.

But Julian had been directing the desperation.

The lake house had never been her plan alone.

I looked at him.

“You told her to go through my things.”

His attorney was not there to stop him.

His mother was frightened.

His wrists were cuffed.

And Julian made the mistake of answering from anger.

“I told her to get what we needed.”

Officer Mason looked at him.

So did I.

Julian realized too late what he had said.

Victoria backed away from her son as if she had just discovered the distance between protecting someone and going down with him.
