Chapter 6 - Samuel Starts Losing The Room

Samuel came toward the bed so quickly Nurse Emily stepped between us.
“Grace,” he said, forcing concern into his voice. “You’re confused. Don’t talk right now.”
I looked at his hands.
Those hands had once held mine in a courthouse hallway after my father’s funeral. He had promised he would never let anyone take advantage of me. I believed him because grief makes a person hungry for shelter.
Now those same hands were clenched at his sides.
“I’m not confused,” I said.
Joyce made a wounded sound. “She’s drugged. Doctor, you can hear her. She doesn’t know what she’s saying.”
Dr. Bennett didn’t move. “Mrs. Sanders answered clearly.”
Samuel’s eyes cut to him. “You don’t know my wife.”
“No,” Dr. Bennett said. “But I know burn patterns.”
The curtain opened behind him.
Two detectives stepped into the room.
One was a woman in a navy blazer with a badge clipped to her belt. Detective Maria Alvarez. The other was a tall man with close-cropped hair who introduced himself as Detective Nolan Price.
Samuel changed instantly.
His shoulders straightened. His voice deepened. The courtroom version of him appeared, polished and offended.
“Detectives, this is absurd. My wife had an accident.”
Detective Alvarez looked at me first, not him.
“Mrs. Sanders, are you able to speak?”
Samuel interrupted. “She is under medication.”
Alvarez didn’t blink. “I asked Mrs. Sanders.”
I swallowed against the dryness in my throat. “Yes.”
Joyce gripped Samuel’s sleeve. For the first time, she looked her age.
Detective Price held up a phone sealed in an evidence sleeve.
“Mr. Sanders,” he said, “a trustee named Martin Vale delivered digital footage to our department twenty minutes ago.”
Samuel’s face went still.
It wasn’t fear yet.
It was calculation.
“Grace,” he said quietly, almost tenderly, “whatever you think you recorded, you need to be careful. You’re hurting yourself.”
That was the Samuel only I knew.
Soft voice. Hard threat.
Detective Alvarez turned toward him. “Do not speak to her.”
Joyce’s pearls clicked under her trembling fingers.
On Nurse Emily’s face, shock had turned into anger.

For years, Samuel had controlled the room before I ever entered it.
This time, the room belonged to the truth.
