Chapter 8 - The Decision That Ended the Old Marriage

Rachel stopped hoping Daniel would explain voluntarily.
On Friday morning she instructed Megan to begin formal separation paperwork and request an interim parenting arrangement.
North Carolina required time before an absolute divorce could be finalized.
Rachel was nowhere near that stage.
But she could stop pretending the marriage was functioning.
She also asked Megan to document the hospital assault.
Not because Rachel wanted Daniel arrested.
Because she no longer wanted his violence converted into a marital disagreement.
Megan was careful.
“You understand he may raise the slap.”
“He should.”
The attorney looked up.
Rachel continued.
“I’m not hiding what I did.”
That answer seemed to matter.
Rachel proposed that Daniel spend time with Lily without Margaret present while CPS completed its assessment.
Daniel responded through his own attorney by accusing Rachel of alienating him from his daughter.
Then he called her directly.
“You hired a lawyer?”
“Yes.”
“Jesus Christ, Rachel.”
“You were building a file on me.”
“I was protecting myself.”
“From your wife?”
“From someone who kept talking about leaving.”
Rachel closed her eyes.
“I talked about a promotion.”
“You talked about Charlotte.”
“Two days a month.”
“That’s how it starts.”
The phrase sounded borrowed.
Rachel knew from whom.
“Did your mother tell you I was planning to take Lily?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
Rachel told him all future non-emergency discussions would go through email or their attorneys.
Then she ended the call.
Daniel had spent months preparing for Rachel to leave.
Now his preparation had helped make sure she did.
That afternoon the CPS investigator, Angela Morris, scheduled separate home interviews.
Before hanging up, Angela asked Rachel one question.
“Mrs. Harper, your husband says there’s a documented history of concerns about your parenting. Is there anything in those records I’m going to see that you haven’t told me?”
Rachel looked at Lily coloring at Claire’s kitchen table.
“Yes,” she said.
“My husband and his mother started creating those records before anyone told me our marriage was supposedly in danger.”

Angela was silent for a moment.
“Then I’ll need to understand why.”
