Chapter 4 - THE NIGHT MY MOTHER LOST HER FAMILY

Diane called a family meeting two days later.

She chose my uncle Robert’s country club because public rooms had always been her favorite stage. She invited relatives, our family attorney and two members of the charitable foundation she chaired.

She told them Elena had suffered a breakdown and convinced Chloe to steal private documents.

I entered carrying Noah’s empty car seat.

Elena did not attend. She stayed at the hospital with our son.

My mother smiled when she saw I had come alone.

“I knew you would finally think clearly.”

“I am.”

Chloe entered behind me with the police officer handling Elena’s assault report.

Mother’s smile vanished.

I connected my laptop to the room’s television.

The first video showed Diane hiding Elena’s keys.

The second showed her refusing to return them while Noah cried upstairs.

The third showed Elena attempting to leave with the baby and Diane striking her across the face.

Several relatives gasped.

My mother raised her voice.

“She was hysterical. I was stopping her from driving recklessly.”

Then Chloe’s backup recording played.

It showed Diane typing messages on Elena’s phone.

Her voice was clear.

“Once Ethan sees this, he’ll understand she isn’t fit.”

Chloe’s voice came from off camera.

“You’re lying to him.”

“I’m protecting my grandson.”

“You’re trying to steal him.”

The final recording showed Diane speaking to her attorney on speakerphone.

She discussed using Elena’s postpartum treatment records, my travel schedule and fabricated messages to seek emergency custody.

When the screen went dark, nobody spoke.

Mother looked around the room, searching for the person who would rescue her reputation.

She chose me.

“Ethan, explain to them that Elena has been unstable.”

I stood.

“The only unstable thing in my house was the power you had over it.”

Her face hardened.

“I gave you that life.”

“You gave me guilt and called it loyalty.”

She pointed at Chloe.

“Your sister has always been weak.”

“No,” Chloe said. “I was afraid of you.”

Mother turned toward our relatives.

“You all know what Elena is like.”

Uncle Robert pushed back his chair.

“What I know is that you let a newborn lie upstairs with a dangerous fever because taking him to the hospital would ruin your plan.”

For the first time, Diane had no audience willing to follow her version.

I removed her as an authorized trustee from every account connected to my company and family estate. I revoked her access to our home and informed the foundation board that I would release the recordings if she continued presenting herself as a family advocate.

The officer then approached her regarding the assault and interference with emergency medical care.

Mother looked at me as if I had struck her.

“You’re choosing that woman over your own blood.”

“Elena is my wife. Noah is my son.”

“I’m your mother.”

“That was supposed to mean you protected us.”

Her eyes filled with tears, but I finally recognized them for what they were.

Not remorse.

Loss of control.

As the officer escorted her from the room, Diane looked back at Chloe.

“You’ll regret betraying me.”

May you like

Chloe’s voice trembled, but she answered.

“No. I regret how long I obeyed you.”
