Chapter 2 - THE SPECIAL SURPRISE

The employee wore a navy resort polo, khaki shorts, and a plastic badge that read EVAN WHITMORE — GUEST OPERATIONS.
He stopped beside Courtney’s lounge chair with the polished smile of a man delivering champagne to a honeymoon suite.
“Excuse me, ma’am.”
Courtney sat up immediately.
Her entire personality changed.
The bored cruelty disappeared. Her shoulders straightened, and she touched her hair as several guests turned to watch.
“Yes?”
“Congratulations,” Evan said brightly. “The resort has arranged a special surprise for you.”
Courtney smiled as though she had been expecting recognition all morning.
“Oh. How lovely.”
The young man beside her finally lowered his phone.
He looked at Evan, and something passed between them.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
Evan held out the blue box.
Courtney accepted it with both hands.
“What is it?”
“You should open it.”
By then, nearly everyone around the shallow end was watching.
Courtney lifted the lid.
Her scream cut across the pool deck.
She dropped the box onto her lap.
Inside were our room-number tags, the corner of one blue towel, several printed security photographs, and a typed incident report.
Resting on top of everything was a small velvet ring box.
Courtney stared at it.
Then she turned toward her boyfriend.
“Dylan?”
The young man stood slowly.
His name was Dylan Whitmore.
The same last name printed on Evan’s badge.
Evan picked up the blue box before it could fall.
“Those photographs were taken by the pool security cameras,” he said. “They show you removing reservation tags from chairs 118 and 119, throwing the towels away, and taking seats assigned to another room.”
Courtney’s face hardened.
“This is ridiculous. They weren’t using them.”
“The reservation policy allows guests to leave for thirty minutes.”
“They were gone.”
“For fourteen minutes and thirty-seven seconds.”
A few guests laughed quietly.
Courtney’s cheeks turned red.
She pointed toward me.
“She caused this?”
“No,” Evan said. “You did.”
Dylan looked at the velvet box.
“What is that doing in there?”
Evan’s professional smile disappeared.
“You gave it to me yesterday.”
Courtney looked from one brother to the other.
“Gave him what?”
Dylan rubbed one hand over his face.
“I asked Evan to keep the ring in the hotel safe.”
The pool deck fell completely silent.
Courtney’s mouth opened.
“You bought me a ring?”
“I did.”
Her expression changed again.
For one foolish second, hope returned.
She reached toward the box.
Dylan took it first.
“I planned to propose tonight.”
Courtney smiled shakily.
“Okay. Then let’s go upstairs and talk about this.”
Dylan did not move.
“I was sitting beside you when that mother asked for her chairs back.”
“You didn’t say anything.”
“I know.”
His voice carried more shame than anger.
“I should have.”
Courtney lowered her voice.
“She was being dramatic.”
Dylan looked toward Mia.
My daughter had pulled her knees to her chest and wrapped both arms around them.
“She’s eight years old.”
“I didn’t know she was sick.”
“You looked at her bracelet.”
“That doesn’t mean anything.”
Evan removed the ring box from Courtney’s reach and handed it to Dylan.
“The cameras don’t record sound,” Evan said. “But six guests heard what you said.”
Courtney turned toward the surrounding chairs.
People looked away from her, but not in sympathy.
“You all need to mind your own business.”
Evan remained calm.
“Guest safety is my business.”
She laughed sharply.
“You’re a pool employee.”
Dylan closed his eyes.
“Courtney, stop.”
“What?”
Evan clipped the blue box shut.
“I’m the general manager.”
Courtney stared at him.
“No, you aren’t.”
“My family owns Blue Harbor.”
Her head turned slowly toward Dylan.
He looked sick.
“You told me your family invested in resorts.”
“We own seven of them,” Dylan said.
Courtney’s confidence finally cracked.
Evan continued.
“You are being removed from this property for harassment, theft of guest belongings, and violation of the conduct policy.”
“You can’t throw me out. I’m staying with Dylan.”
“The room is registered under his name.”
Courtney grabbed Dylan’s arm.
“Tell him.”
Dylan gently removed her hand.
“I’m checking out too.”
“What are you talking about?”
“I’m taking you home.”
Her eyes went to the ring in his hand.
“And then?”
May you like
Dylan looked at Mia again.
“Then I’m returning this.”
