Chapter 5 - THE PHOTO THAT SHOULD NOT HAVE EXISTED
Michael’s wife discovered the truth accidentally.
Not through some convenient stranger.
Through Daniel’s carelessness.
His sister, Amanda, posted a photograph from a family barbecue.
Daniel had insisted Emily stay home.
Seven months pregnant, tired, and angry about being excluded, Emily had not questioned it much.
Amanda photographed Daniel beside a grill.
In the background, barely visible through the open patio door, Emily was standing at a kitchen counter.
Pregnant.
Very obviously pregnant.
Laura Grant saw the picture because months earlier Daniel had allowed her to follow Amanda’s public account while trying to prove his family background was legitimate.
Laura enlarged the photograph.
Then sent it to her husband.
Michael hired Nathan the next day.
Nathan first assumed there was an innocent explanation.
Perhaps the photograph was old.
It was not.
The barbecue had happened nine days earlier.
He verified the weather, date, and metadata preserved in another public photograph from the same gathering.
Then Nathan discovered Daniel had bought an international airline ticket.
That was why he came to O’Hare.
Not to threaten him.
To serve a civil preservation demand through counsel if possible and document whether Daniel was leaving the country.
Emily listened to all of this in Cynthia’s office.
The anger inside her changed shape.
Daniel had told her at the airport:
They weren’t told our daughter survived.
He had made the Grants sound dangerous.
As though they were people hunting a child.
They had been grieving a child they believed they would never meet.
A child who had never been theirs legally.
But a child Daniel had encouraged them to love.
Michael had built a crib.
Laura had bought a yellow blanket.
Emily learned that from a photograph Nathan accidentally left visible in the file.
She pushed it away.
“I don’t want to see that.”
Nathan immediately closed the folder.
“Sorry.”
Emily breathed carefully.
She was furious at Daniel.
She was also unsettled by Michael and Laura.
Their grief did not create rights over her daughter.
Cynthia made that clear.
“They are victims of an alleged financial fraud. They are not prospective parents to your child now.”
Emily nodded.
“Does Laura know that?”
“Yes.”
“Has she said it?”
Nathan looked at Emily.
“She asked me to tell you she does not want contact with you unless you choose it.”
That helped.
More than Emily expected.
Then Cynthia found an additional payment.
$9,000.
Not from Michael and Laura.
A different trust account.
Different state.
Different attorney.
Emily stared at the screen.
“What is that?”
Cynthia looked at Nathan.
Nathan did not know.
The transfer had arrived three months before Daniel contacted the Grants.
Emily felt something cold move through her.
“Was there another couple?”
Nobody answered immediately.
Cynthia enlarged the transaction.
The memo line contained two words.
EXPECTANT EXPENSES.
Emily looked at her stomach.
