Chapter 6 - THE FAMILY DINNER WHERE DIANE CALLED HER UNSTABLE

Diane did not wait for lawyers.
She escalated through family.
She hosted Sunday dinner and invited Hannah, two cousins, and Uncle Richard, the brother of Ryan’s late father.
Then she let it “slip” that Emily was having a difficult emotional episode connected to financial stress.
Emily learned about the gathering only because Hannah texted her:
You should know Mom is building a story without you.
Cassandra told Emily not to go.
Emily went anyway.
Not alone.
Mrs. Carter drove.
The older woman wore a beige raincoat and a look of quiet ferocity that made Emily unexpectedly steadier.
The dining room went silent when Emily walked in.
Diane recovered first.
“Emily. This isn’t a good time.”
“No? You seemed comfortable discussing me without me.”
Ryan stood, clearly torn between humiliation and relief that Emily had arrived without a police escort.
Uncle Richard looked genuinely confused.
“What’s this about?”
Diane sighed.
“Ryan was trying to stabilize some investments. Emily misunderstood the paperwork, and now everything is spiraling because she’s become convinced she was deceived.”
Emily looked at Ryan.
He said nothing.
Then Diane added, with perfect regret, “Some women are simply not built for financial pressure.”
Hannah slammed her fork down.
“Mom.”
But Emily was no longer surprised.
She was angry in a cleaner way now.
She took a set of bank statements from her bag and placed them in the middle of the table.
“That’s the home-equity line opened against my house.”
“Our house,” Ryan muttered.
Emily ignored him.
“Those are the wire transfers into Ryan’s hidden company. And that is the transfer into Diane’s personal account.”
Diane’s face went blank.
“Personal account?” Uncle Richard repeated.
Ryan finally moved.
“Stop.”
Emily looked at him.
“At the hospital, I still thought this was mostly your mother.”
He went still.
She continued.
“Then I found out about the company you formed behind my back.”
Cousin Laura stared at Ryan.
“You formed an LLC?”
Diane tried to cut in.
“This is not the whole picture.”
Emily turned to her.
“No. The whole picture includes you knocking me to the floor with a rolling pin when I refused to backdate fraud.”
That landed.
Heavily.
Uncle Richard looked at Mrs. Carter then, as if only just noticing the neighbor.
Mrs. Carter adjusted her glasses and said, “I watched him take her phone and tell her to crawl into the rain.”
Ryan paled.
No one at the table laughed.
No one rushed to Diane’s defense.
For the first time in years, the woman who controlled every room in the Parker orbit had said something vicious in front of people who were no longer willing to treat it as family texture.
Diane stood.
“You will not turn this house into a courtroom.”
Emily looked around the polished mahogany table.
Too late.
Because the next question came not from her.
May you like
It came from Uncle Richard.
“Ryan… did Emily ever authorize any of this?”
