Chapter 11 - The Reports I Buried

Caleb's sentence followed me into the review room. Two years earlier, when the center began courting wealthy patients, he had filed three reports about staff reassigned for appearance rather than acuity. I marked them "coaching issues" and asked him to revise them. I claimed I was protecting a young nurse from sounding insubordinate. I was protecting Ethan, our investment, and our donor-dinner marriage. Worse, I had recruited Serena after learning about her miscarriages, promising privacy while quietly imagining the campaign her recovery could support. I never approved an unsafe ratio, but I helped build a culture where Ethan could call danger bad optics and expect obedience. During my interview, I corrected the record before the investigator asked. My admission exposed me to professional discipline and weakened my claim against Ethan. It also made Caleb finally meet my eyes. "I needed you to hear me then," he said. "I do now," I answered, knowing late listening did not erase the cost.
