Chapter 14 - THE LAST THING MY FATHER APOLOGIZED FORAlmost a year after I returned early, Dad asked me to come to his apartment.

He had something on the kitchen table.

The old cleaning rag.

I stared.

“You kept that?”

He looked embarrassed.

“It was in my overnight bag.”

“Dad.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

“I thought I might need it to remember.”

“Remember what?”

He sat.

“That I let shame make me stupid.”

I hated the sentence.

“Don’t call yourself stupid.”

“I signed four and a half million dollars loose because somebody told me my daughter was scared.”

“You thought you were helping.”

“That’s the problem.”

He looked at me.

“I didn’t verify because verifying felt like doubting you.”

That was the final lesson hidden inside his part of the scheme.

Trust does not mean refusing evidence.

Love does not make verification disloyal.

“Why were you cleaning the floor?” I asked.

He almost laughed.

“We covered that.”

“No. Really.”

Dad stared at the rag.

“Because Olivia kept telling me Arthur had sacrificed everything to protect you.”

He swallowed.

“And I believed I had failed you by letting you marry him.”

My chest tightened.

“So every time she gave me some humiliating job, part of me thought I deserved it.”

I reached across the table.

He took my hand.

“Dad, you didn’t make Arthur forge my signature.”

“I know.”

“You didn’t make Olivia lie.”

“I know.”

“You did make mistakes.”

“I know.”

That was why the conversation worked.

No absolution.

No total blame.

Then Dad pushed the rag toward me.

“Throw it away.”

I smiled.

“You throw it away.”

He thought.

Then walked to the trash.

Dropped it in.

No ceremony.

No speech.

When he came back, he looked lighter.

Before I left, he asked:

“Do you think we’ll ever stop talking about Arthur?”

“Eventually.”

“What will we talk about?”

“Probably how you hate my new couch.”

“I do hate your new couch.”

I laughed.

There we were.

Father and daughter again.

Not exactly as before.

May you like

Better in one important way.

Direct.
