Chapter 5

Chapter 5: What Grandpa Was For
The ambulance took me away under soft white lights.
Noah rode with my father.
At the hospital, the doctors said I would heal. Slowly, painfully, but I would heal. The police took statements. A nurse with kind eyes photographed the bruises I had spent years hiding. My father sat beside my bed with Noah asleep against his chest.
For the first time in years, nobody asked me why I stayed.
They only asked what I needed now.
A few days later, my father brought me a small envelope.
Inside was the spare key to his house.
“You and Noah come home,” he said.
I cried then.
Not because I was weak.
Because for the first time in a long time, the door in front of me was open.
Evan tried to call from jail twice. I did not answer.
He sent one message through his lawyer.
He said I had ruined his life.
I stared at those words for a long time.
Then I deleted them.
Because the truth was simple.
I had not ruined his life.
I had finally stopped letting him ruin mine.
Months later, Noah asked if Grandpa was a superhero.
My father laughed and said no.
But Noah shook his head.
“Yes, you are,” he said. “Because when Mama couldn’t breathe, you came.”
Dad looked at me over Noah’s head.
His eyes filled, but his voice stayed steady.

“That’s what grandpas are for,” he said.
And this time, I believed him.
