Chapter 4 - VANESSA’S EXIT PLAN

Marcus traced Vanessa to a furnished apartment in Brickell rented through Meridian Harbor.
She had left behind clothing, unopened mail, and a laptop wiped so thoroughly that even the operating system was gone. Her passport was missing.
But she had also left something Ryan did not know existed.
The building’s concierge kept a handwritten package log after a software outage. During the previous month, Vanessa had received four deliveries addressed to a Cayman Islands corporate service firm. The last package required her signature.
Ellen obtained the shipping records through Meridian’s civil audit.
The packages contained banking authentication devices.
Meridian was not a failed investment. It was a conduit. Money from my family trust passed through legitimate-looking vendors before reaching accounts controlled jointly by Ryan and Vanessa.
The current loss was just under eleven million dollars. The rest had been circulated among related companies to create the appearance of business activity.
Ryan had not spent years seducing Vanessa into helping him steal.
She had designed the system.
Her accounting degree, international banking contacts, and consulting contracts had given her the structure. Ryan supplied access to me.
That explained the way she had smiled on the yacht. She did not behave like a mistress finally being chosen. She behaved like a partner watching the last obstacle disappear.
It also explained why she took Ryan’s phone after the rescue beacon appeared.
She had been preparing to abandon him.
The hidden phone’s cloud backup showed recent searches for private aviation from the Bahamas and countries without straightforward extradition arrangements. Ryan had searched none of them.
Vanessa had.
A draft email, never sent, was addressed to a financial-crimes attorney.
It offered evidence against Ryan in exchange for protection.
“She was going to turn on him,” I said.
“Possibly,” Ellen replied. “Or she wanted leverage.”
The draft included a reference to “the medical contingency.”
We searched Meridian’s files and found monthly payments to a private clinic in Fort Lauderdale. The clinic had produced the false psychiatric evaluation using information copied from my genuine prenatal records.
The doctor who signed it claimed he had never met me.
Someone had given the clinic my medical history.
Only four people had regular access: my obstetrician, two nurses, and Ryan.

When investigators interviewed the staff, one nurse recognized Vanessa’s photograph.
Vanessa had visited the clinic twice using my name.
