Chapter 12 - WHAT EACH OF THEM WAS ACTUALLY AFRAID TO LOSE

The final therapeutic confrontation occurred without Lily.

Laura.

Grant.

Evelyn.

Two clinicians.

No lawyers in the room.

Grant began with his mother.

“Did Dad love me?”

Evelyn looked irritated.

“That isn't a useful question.”

“It is to me.”

“He loved you in his way.”

“What does that mean?”

“He was inconsistent.”

“Did you hide letters?”

“Yes.”

Grant looked down.

“Why?”

“I told you.”

“No. You told me why you think it was justified.”

Evelyn’s composure cracked.

“Because every time he came back, you became impossible for days.”

“I was a child.”

“Exactly.”

Grant laughed bitterly.

“So you fixed my feelings by removing him.”

“I gave you stability.”

“You gave me your version.”

The clinicians did not interrupt.

Then Evelyn turned toward Laura.

“And now she gets to use this to take Lily.”

Laura answered before Grant could.

“I don't want Lily taken from him.”

Evelyn scoffed.

“You filed for primary custody.”

“Yes.”

“That's taking her.”

“No. That's asking a court to decide where she lives most of the time because Grant tried to teach her I was unsafe.”

Grant flinched.

Laura looked at him.

“I need you to hear that without your mother translating it.”

Evelyn started to speak.

Grant raised a hand.

“Mom.”

She stopped.

Laura continued.

“I was afraid of you too.”

Grant frowned.

“You think I was going to hurt you?”

“No. I was afraid every disagreement would become evidence that I was unstable. So I avoided you. I left conversations. I left the house. I made choices out of fear.”

Grant looked away.

Laura added:

“And then you used those choices exactly the way I feared you would.”

His jaw tightened.

“I thought you were going to make me a weekend father.”

“And I thought you were going to make me disappear.”

Neither spoke.

That was the actual marriage they had been living.

Not two parents fighting because one loved Lily more.

Two frightened adults trying to prevent loss by controlling the conditions of the other parent’s presence.

Grant’s version had become more dangerous because he recruited Lily into it.

Evelyn finally whispered:

“I only wanted my son safe.”

Grant looked at her.

“And now Lily needs protection from what you taught me.”

Evelyn began crying.

Grant did not comfort her.

May you like

Not yet.

For the first time, he allowed his mother’s pain to exist without letting it dictate his next decision.
