Chapter 14 - THE HOUSE PHILLIP COULD NO LONGER CONTROL

The suburban house was sold during the divorce process.

Jiso did not want it.

Phillip could not comfortably keep it alone.

For Ethan, losing the house felt like another punishment.

Jiso let him grieve it.

He had loved his bedroom.

The maple tree.

The neighbor’s dog.

The porch.

Especially the porch.

That surprised her.

“I thought you hated waiting there.”

Ethan shrugged.

“It wasn’t the porch’s fault.”

Jiso smiled through tears.

Children sometimes understood accountability better than adults.

Robert helped Jiso rent a townhouse fifteen minutes away.

He offered to pay several months in advance.

Jiso refused.

Then accepted help with the security deposit.

Another change.

Independence did not require rejecting every kindness.

Phillip moved into an apartment near Ethan’s school.

He continued treatment.

Worked.

Paid support.

Attended structured visits.

Sometimes he failed emotionally.

Once he told Ethan:

“I wish your mom would give us another chance.”

Ethan reported feeling uncomfortable.

The supervisor addressed it.

Phillip apologized.

Progress was no longer measured by never making a mistake.

It was measured by whether he accepted correction without punishing the person who gave it.

Jiso watched from a distance.

She did not make his recovery her project.

The final divorce documents were signed eleven months after Robert walked through the open front door.

Phillip signed first.

Jiso signed second.

She cried afterward.

Robert waited in the hallway.

When she came out, he opened his arms.

She shook her head.

“Not yet.”

He nodded.

No offense.

No pressure.

Five minutes later, Jiso hugged him herself.

That small moment meant more than she expected.

Love could wait.

Control could not.
