Chapter 11 - MARGARET LOST HER SISTER

Margaret confronted Diane with lawyers present.

No shouting.

That surprised Claire.

Diane looked smaller without family history protecting her.

Margaret sat across from her.

“Did you tell Ryan to ask Robert about Claire’s incapacity before the wedding?”

Diane stared at the table.

“Yes.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

“Why?”

“Because I thought Robert’s trust was unfair.”

Claire almost laughed.

“Unfair to whom?”

Diane looked at her.

“Everyone.”

Robert had helped Diane financially for decades.

That generosity created its own resentment.

Diane believed Robert used money to create dependence while pretending to be generous.

When he placed nearly everything for Claire behind independent trust structures, Diane interpreted it as another expression of control.

“You thought my money should be easier for Ryan to reach?”

“I thought spouses should share.”

“It wasn’t your marriage.”

Diane looked down.

“No.”

After Robert removed Diane as successor trustee, resentment deepened.

Years later, when Eric’s investment began collapsing, Ryan approached Diane again.

This time he did not ask about trust law.

He asked what genuine cognitive decline looked like.

Diane answered.

“Why?” Naomi asked.

Diane cried.

“Because I thought Claire was already unstable.”

Claire’s anger flashed.

“Before he started triggering me?”

Diane looked at her.

“Ryan said there were incidents.”

“And instead of talking to me?”

“You never liked me.”

Claire stared.

That was almost childish enough to be unbelievable.

Almost.

Diane had spent years interpreting Claire’s independence as judgment.

Every distance became rejection.

Every boundary became superiority.

Ryan knew how to use that too.

Margaret asked:

“Did you impersonate Claire three times?”

Diane shook her head.

“Once.”

“Who did the others?”

“Ryan.”

“Did you know?”

Diane cried harder.

“Afterward.”

“And you said nothing.”

“I thought Dr. Kessler would just recommend evaluation.”

Claire’s voice became quiet.

“Instead Ryan got a letter.”

Diane nodded.

“And you mailed it to him.”

Another nod.

Margaret looked at her sister for a long time.

“Did you ever think Claire might actually believe she was losing her mind?”

Diane covered her face.

“I didn’t think it would go that far.”

Claire laughed.

“You helped create fake psychiatric appointments.”

Diane sobbed.

“I know.”

“You gave him language to trigger.”

“I know.”

“You watched him document me.”

“I know.”

Claire stood.

She could not listen to more.

Margaret remained seated.

“You’re my sister.”

Diane looked up.

Margaret continued.

“That fact kept making me think there had to be an explanation that made this less ugly.”

Diane reached toward her.

Margaret moved her hand away.

“There isn’t.”

She stood and left with Claire.

Outside, Margaret began shaking.

Claire wanted to comfort her.

She did not know whether she could.

Margaret whispered:

“I lost her.”

Claire looked back at the office door.

“No.”

Margaret turned.

“She made choices.”

May you like

Claire took a breath.

“You’re finally seeing them.”
