Chapter 8 - THE DECISION I MADE WHILE MAYA WAS ASLEEP

I filed for divorce twelve days after the lawn incident.

Not because Robert wanted me to.

He never asked.

Not because Serena existed.

Infidelity can destroy a marriage.

It can also sometimes be survived.

What ended mine was the architecture around it.

The loan.

The lies.

The hidden investment.

The way Julian responded when exposed.

He did not say:

I’m leaving.

He said:

You leave.

From my house.

With our newborn.

That told me what marriage had become in his mind.

Ownership through presence.

If he occupied the space more confidently, maybe reality would adapt.

Maya slept in a bassinet beside Dana’s conference table while I reviewed the petition.

Divorce at thirty-two.

Six-week-old baby.

Postpartum body.

No cinematic confidence.

I cried between signatures.

Then signed anyway.

Julian’s attorney responded quickly.

He wanted temporary access to Ashgrove.

His clothes.

Documents.

Home office equipment.

Reasonable.

We arranged supervised retrieval while I was away.

He also requested parenting time with Maya.

That hurt.

Not because he shouldn’t be her father.

Because part of me wanted the lawn to erase his rights emotionally.

Law and parenting do not work that way.

He had not harmed Maya physically.

He had cared for her appropriately before the incident.

We worked through temporary arrangements focused on her age, feeding schedule, safety and the conflict between us.

Initially visits were structured and short.

Not punishment.

Reality.

A six-week-old infant needed stability.

Julian complied.

He sent no messages through Maya.

No “tell Mommy.”

No attempt to use parenting exchanges for marriage conversations.

That surprised me.

Perhaps his lawyer was excellent.

Perhaps he finally understood consequences.

Then Hale Meridian placed him on administrative leave.

Not because I was Robert’s daughter.

The company investigation concerned three issues.

Undisclosed intimate relationship with another senior employee involved in related strategic communications.

Potential misuse of company resources connected to Vale House planning.

Accuracy of external financial representations referencing Hale-associated property.

Serena was placed on leave too.

Julian immediately told colleagues Robert was retaliating.

Then the board’s independent audit committee took control of the review.

Robert formally recused himself.

That was his decision.

When he told me, I said:

“You don’t have to prove anything to me.”

“I’m not.”

He looked tired.

“I’m proving it to the company.”

Another difference between the father I remembered and the man trying to become my father now.

Old Robert would have solved the problem.

This Robert removed himself from it.
