Chapter 1 - THREE DAYS MARRIED

Three days after Claire married Dean Bennett, he shoved her into the bathroom mirror.

The crack sounded louder than she expected.

One second Claire was standing beside the marble vanity asking why his paycheck had nearly doubled.

The next, Dean’s palm drove into her upper shoulder and her back struck the mirror hard enough to fracture it behind her.

She dropped onto one knee.

Pieces of glass scattered across the marble without cutting her badly, but the impact stole her breath.

Dean stood over her.

“You question my paycheck again, and this is what happens.”

Claire looked up.

Not at him.

At Linda.

Dean’s mother was standing two feet away in a cream satin robe, opening her makeup compact.

She stepped around Claire as though the woman on the floor were an inconvenient laundry basket.

“Clean this disgusting mess before you embarrass my son again.”

Robert Bennett opened a beer.

Actually opened one.

In Claire’s bathroom.

While his son stood over her.

“Don’t let that woman get under your skin,” he told Dean.

Claire had spent six years learning how to survive moments like this without calling them what they were.

Six years dating Dean.

Living with him for four.

Engaged for eleven months.

Married for seventy-three hours.

The mirror shove was the first time he had knocked her down.

It was not the first time he had grabbed her.

Blocked a doorway.

Taken her phone.

Smashed something near her.

Or explained afterward that she had pushed him too far.

Claire tried to stand.

Dean caught her upper arm.

He forced her back down.

“Stay there.”

Linda checked the corner of her lipstick.

Robert held out the beer.

Dean released Claire and took it.

That was the moment something changed.

Not because Claire suddenly became fearless.

Because Dean looked so comfortable.

His parents looked comfortable.

And Claire understood they had all expected her to absorb this.

She let her right hand slide toward the pocket of her floral house dress.

Dean was drinking.

Robert was laughing.

Linda saw Claire’s fingers disappear into the fabric.

Her eyes narrowed.

Claire closed her hand around the black emergency keychain.

Dean reached toward her again.

Claire knocked his hand away sharply.

He recoiled.

For the first time, surprise crossed his face.

“Six years of silence made you think I was helpless.”

Claire closed her thumb over the recessed button.

One click.

Two.

Three.

Dean didn’t hear it.

The device made no alarm inside the condo.

It sent one silent signal to the building’s security desk.

A second to the safety contact Claire had established with her attorney four months earlier.

A third activated a thirty-minute secure backup of footage from the condo’s interior security system.

Dean lifted his beer.

Linda stopped checking her makeup.

She was staring at Claire’s hand.

“Dean…”

He looked at his mother.

Linda’s voice dropped.

“What did she just press?”

Claire pulled the keychain against her chest.

Linda lunged for it.

Claire jerked backward.

Then they heard it.

Heavy footsteps outside the master suite.

Dean’s face collapsed.

“Claire.”

She said nothing.

A fist struck the outer bedroom door.

“Building security.”

Robert lowered his beer.

Dean stared at Claire.

Not angry now.

Afraid.

And Claire finally understood something.

The keychain frightened him more than the possibility that security had seen the assault.

Which meant the paycheck she had questioned fifteen minutes earlier mattered far more than she knew.
