CHAPTER 6

CHAPTER 6: THE BOARD CALL

The board called at 11:18 p.m.

Richard tried to take it privately.

My father stopped him.

“You will take it on speaker,” he said. “Claire is part of this discussion.”

Richard laughed once, bitter and low.

“She is my wife.”

“Not for long,” I said.

That landed harder than I expected.

Not on him.

On me.

For six years, I had carried the title like a locked room. Wife. Hostess. Accessory. Apology. Shield.

Saying the end out loud felt like opening a window in winter.

The board chair’s voice came through Richard’s laptop.

“Richard, explain why Whitmore Capital has pulled the emergency line.”

Richard straightened, trying to rebuild himself in real time.

“A temporary misunderstanding. Claire reacted emotionally to a private marital issue.”

I leaned toward the laptop.

“No. Richard presented coercive divorce terms that attempted to strip me from protected financial interests tied to the Whitmore agreement. The clause was triggered by his own document.”

A pause.

Then another board member spoke.

“Is Thomas Whitmore on the call?”

My father answered.

“Yes.”

“Will Whitmore Capital consider reinstating the line?”

Richard looked at the phone, desperate but too proud to ask.

My father said, “Under new governance.”

Richard’s hand closed into a fist on the desk.

“What does that mean?”

“It means Claire remains protected. It means an independent audit. It means you step aside during review.”

Margaret gasped.

“Absolutely not.”

No one answered her.

The board chair said, “Richard, given the current exposure, we are moving to emergency vote.”

Richard stared at the laptop.

“You can’t do this.”

The board chair sounded tired.

“We can, and we are.”

Five minutes later, the man who had told me I would leave with nothing was removed from operational control of his own company.

Temporary, they called it.

Everyone in that room knew better.

Richard looked at me with something almost like hatred.

“You destroyed me.”

I shook my head.

“No. I stopped saving you.”

That was the truth he would never forgive.

I picked up the legal folder.

Not the divorce papers.

My folder.

May you like

My proof.

My exit.
