Chapter 9 - When the Conflict Reached the City
Coastal Heritage Bank suspended the Bellweather refinancing and ordered an independent review of all supporting documents.
The project’s outside investor responded by freezing additional capital contributions. The City of Savannah’s historic-preservation office requested clarification regarding the disputed cost reports because the project had applied for local incentives.
No one rushed into the Mercer office with handcuffs.
The consequences came through emails, accountants, withheld funds, and scheduled interviews.
They were slower than spectacle and harder to dismiss.
Celeste blamed Elena publicly within the company while denying Elena had ever been involved. The contradiction spread among employees.
Some contacted Elena angrily.
Others contacted her quietly.
A project coordinator named Wyatt Greene told Daniel Cho that Celeste had instructed staff to reclassify labor from three smaller jobs under the Bellweather cost code. Wyatt had assumed it was temporary bookkeeping until Martin resigned.
A subcontractor confirmed that an invoice in the loan package was nearly twice the amount his company had actually billed.
The bank’s evidence strengthened.
Elena’s credibility still faced one serious problem.
Adrian produced emails showing she had discussed joining Mercer Preservation Group after marriage. In one message, Elena had written:
I could help build better controls once the wedding is behind us.
Adrian’s attorney used the sentence to argue that she knew she would participate in the company’s finances.
Marisol placed the entire email chain beside it.
Adrian had asked about future budgeting systems. Elena had agreed to help design them after reviewing the books properly. Nothing in the exchange authorized past certifications, personal guarantees, or loan submissions.
Still, the selective quotation worked outside legal offices.
A local business blog described the dispute as a “failed wedding and disputed family agreement.” Comments accused Elena of changing her mind after enjoying the Mercer family’s money.
She had never taken money from them.
Her father had paid for most of the wedding.
At work, the hospital board delayed clearing her for full duties until Coastal Heritage Bank confirmed exactly how her license number had been obtained.
The misuse was threatening the career she had built long before Adrian.
Then Claire appeared at Paige’s house carrying a flash drive.
Elena did not invite her inside.
“What is it?” she asked from the doorway.
“Emails from Mom’s account that were printed at the office,” Claire said. “Nate found them in a box marked shredding.”
Elena looked at the drive but did not take it.
“Why now?”
Claire’s eyes filled. “Because Mom fired Nate this morning anyway.”
“For talking to me?”
“For refusing to change an estimate.”
Claire held out the drive again.
“One email says Adrian found the duplicate costs months ago. Another says he had a plan to fix the bank’s concerns after the wedding.”
Elena took it by the edges.

If the emails were genuine, Adrian had not been caught in Celeste’s scheme at the last minute.
