Chapter 10 - What They Had Arranged Around Her

The email chain started six months earlier.

Richard had written Caleb from a private address, polished and careful in a way Maya had never heard him speak at home.

Maya still resists anything tied to Thomas, but she’ll follow what feels safe and practical. If there’s a structured role or cash flow coming, I need to understand timing. I’ve carried the family long enough. I deserve to know what I’m helping preserve.

Caleb’s first replies were measured, guarded. Then they grew more specific. He discussed transition concerns, the possibility of a future board seat, the importance of “keeping Maya steady.” One email included the line: If she feels attacked, she’ll run. That meant Richard had known all along that pressure would drive her away. He simply believed he could pressure her and hold her at once.

The biggest blow came three messages later.

Richard proposed that Caleb route a “consulting retainer” through one of Richard’s business entities so it would not appear personal. In return he would “encourage a unified family front,” persuade Maya to accept the trust structure, and “help frame the marital finances so external parties see stability.”

Maya sat in Dana’s office with the printed pages spread between them like something unclean.

Three clues from the past week clicked into place at once: the word clients at a child’s birthday party, the urgency over signatures, the panic every time Richard asked whether she had spoken to “them.” He had not just smelled money and lunged. He had entered a bargain—half greed, half desperation—and built pressure around her life until she finally resisted in public.

Caleb covered his face with one hand. “I never agreed to the worst of it.”

“You agreed enough,” Maya said.

He nodded because there was nothing else to do.

Dana pointed to a later email sent the morning of Lily’s party. Richard wrote: She refused to sign. Need a different way to get her under control before formal contact.

Maya read that line four times.

The cake had not been impulsive in the way Richard wanted everyone to believe. Not preplanned like a movie villain. Worse. It was the action of a man whose strategy was failing and who reached for humiliation because control was slipping in front of witnesses he wanted to impress.

Caleb looked sick. “Use the emails however you need.”

Maya’s throat felt scraped raw. “If I do, you may lose your seat.”

“I know.”

For a long moment she thought about Lily, about the part of herself that once believed running from the Bennett name would protect future children from this exact sort of power game.

Instead she had handed her child to a different kind of man.

Dana broke the silence. “These emails change the whole landscape, Maya. But they also force a choice. We can use them narrowly for custody and financial restraints, or we can disclose them broadly and trigger corporate consequences for Caleb and potentially public scrutiny for you.”

Maya looked at the pages again.

May you like

Every road ahead cost something.

“Broadly,” she said at last. “If I keep protecting pieces of this, Lily learns the wrong lesson again.”
