Chapter 5 - THE LIFE THEY PLANNED AFTER ME

I listened to the recording three times.

Each time, Ryan’s voice sounded less like the man I had married.

He and Elaine discussed copying confidential documents through my home network. They talked about creating access logs that would appear to originate from my laptop.

If Calder discovered the leak, Northstar would blame an unstable executive who had shared information with her husband.

Ryan would claim he had unknowingly received the files.

Elaine would use Bayline Advisory Group to collect “consulting fees” from vendors that benefited from the stolen pricing.

My marriage had become part of a fraud plan.

The affair was not the reason Ryan betrayed me.

It was one of the rewards.

Sarah sent the recording to Calder’s legal department and federal investigators.

The next morning, Chloe contacted me from a hotel near Denver International Airport.

Her message contained only six words.

He lied to both of us.

I almost deleted it.

Instead, I agreed to meet through our attorneys.

We spoke by video that afternoon.

Chloe looked nothing like the woman curled beneath a first-class blanket.

Her hair was tied back. Her eyes were swollen from crying. She wore a gray hotel robe and kept looking toward the door.

“I know you hate me,” she said.

“I don’t know you well enough to hate you.”

“I knew Ryan was married.”

“Then you knew enough.”

She accepted that.

“He told me you had been separated privately for almost a year. He said you stayed in the same house because of property and company appearances.”

“We had breakfast together the morning of the flight.”

Chloe closed her eyes.

“He told me you slept in separate rooms.”

“We didn’t.”

“I’m sorry.”

“That does not help me.”

“No.”

She pressed her hands together.

“Ryan said you knew he was taking the Denver trip. He said Portland was the story you both used because Calder couldn’t know Northstar was meeting with a private supplier.”

“He lied about me knowing. What did he tell you about the files?”

“That you gave them to him.”

“Why would I sabotage my own company?”

“He said Calder’s CEO planned to replace you after the Denver project. He said you wanted Northstar to win so you could join him there.”

The story was absurd.

But Ryan had repeated it until Chloe wanted to believe it.

“What were you getting from this?” I asked.

Her face flushed.

“Ryan promised me a vice president position after the contract closed.”

“And marriage?”

“Yes.”

I looked at the woman he had allowed a flight attendant to call his wife.

“Did he buy you a ring?”

Chloe hesitated.

Then she raised her left hand.

A diamond rested on her finger.

“He proposed in Seattle three months ago.”

Ryan had taken me to Seattle two years earlier for our anniversary.

He probably used the same restaurant.

Chloe removed the ring and placed it on the hotel desk.

“I found emails after security took my company laptop. They let me review certain personal files with my lawyer.”

“What emails?”

“Messages between Ryan and his mother.”

She shared her screen.

In one, Elaine called Chloe temporary.

In another, Ryan wrote:

She thinks I’ll marry her. Let her believe it until the board vote.

My anger toward Chloe did not disappear.

But it changed shape.

Ryan had placed each woman inside a different version of reality.

He told me Chloe was only a secretary.

He told Chloe I was only a legal inconvenience.

He told the board the stolen information came through legitimate client discussions.

He told his mother whatever kept her scheme moving.

“Why are you helping now?” I asked.

“Because Ryan told investigators I acted alone.”

There it was.

Not morality.

Self-preservation.

At least it was honest.

Chloe sent copies of expense reports, private messages, and a voice recording from the Denver hotel.

On it, Ryan said:

If Claire sees us, we deny everything. If security finds the files, Chloe made an unauthorized copy.

Chloe’s voice followed.

You said we were doing this together.

Ryan answered:

There is no together if this goes wrong.

The call ended.

Sarah looked at me from across the conference table.

“Will you support a cooperation agreement for her?”

“That’s up to investigators.”

“She wants to know whether you’ll oppose it.”

I looked at Chloe.

“You helped him steal from my company. You slept with my husband. You were willing to let me take the blame until he turned on you.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“Yes.”

“I won’t protect you.”

She nodded.

“But I won’t hide evidence that proves he used you.”

“Thank you.”

“This is not forgiveness.”

“I know.”

When the screen went dark, Sarah asked whether I was all right.

I looked at the engagement ring Chloe had left visible on the hotel desk.

“No.”

May you like

Then I opened the documents she had sent.

“But I finally understand the life Ryan planned after me.”
