Chapter 7 - THE PHONE SUSAN HID

Norman’s phone contained the second layer.

Not because anyone found a secret recording.

Because ordinary call logs were enough.

Monday morning:

Kyle.

Susan.

Kyle again.

Then a Phoenix number Norman did not recognize.

The call lasted nineteen minutes.

“That was the lawyer,” Norman said.

Maya checked the number.

It belonged to a virtual office service.

Not a law firm.

Norman still had the email.

The sender used the name Michael Brenner.

The address ended in a domain created only eleven days earlier.

Corporate security at Chloe’s employer found no attorney by that name connected to the company’s distributor matter.

Maya asked Norman to describe the call carefully.

“The man knew Chloe’s company.”

“What else?”

“He said not to contact her employer. Said that could ‘aggravate the situation.’”

“Did Kyle remain with you?”

“Yes.”

“During the call?”

Norman nodded.

That mattered.

The fake attorney had been designed not merely to deceive Norman but to prevent independent verification.

Then Chloe found a voicemail Kyle had left her father Tuesday.

She played it.

“Norman, Susan says you’re getting nervous. Please trust me. Chloe needs us focused. Keep the phone off tonight because anyone connected to the investigation could complicate negotiations.”

Chloe stopped playback.

There was the instruction.

Documented.

Norman looked sick.

“I listened.”

“You were trying to help me.”

“I also ignored the part of me that knew it sounded wrong.”

Chloe sat beside him.

For the first time, he became angry.

Not loud.

Norman Hale rarely got loud.

“I let that man make me afraid of my own daughter’s voice.”

The sentence stayed with Chloe.

Later that day, Heather called.

She wanted to know whether Chloe had really canceled the loan.

“It was never mine to cancel.”

“Dad’s, whatever.”

“Don’t call him Dad.”

Heather sighed.

“You’re making this personal.”

Chloe almost laughed.

“You ate grapes while my father scrubbed your food off my floor.”

“He dropped it.”

“And then?”

Heather went quiet.

Chloe asked:

“Did you know the federal story was fake?”

“No.”

The answer came too fast.

“Did you know Dad’s farm was backing Saguaro Crest?”

Longer pause.

“Yes.”

“Did you think I knew?”

“Kyle said you did.”

That answer sounded different.

Possibly true.

Then Heather said:

“But Mom knew you didn’t.”

Chloe stopped.

“How do you know?”

“Because they fought about it.”

“When?”

“Sunday.”

Before Norman ever got on the plane.

May you like

Susan had known from the beginning that Chloe was not part of the plan.

And she helped anyway.
