Chapter 4 - THE WIFE THEY SELECTED

Derek and I supposedly met by chance at a charity event in Coral Gables.

He spilled sparkling water near my chair, apologized and made me laugh while helping clean it up.

I had told that story at our wedding.

Harold’s files revealed the truth.

One of his former clients managed military-relocation properties. Through that connection, Harold learned that I was an unmarried officer who had purchased a valuable Miami apartment and maintained substantial personal investments.

Suzanne researched me.

Derek approached me.

Even the spilled drink had been planned.

The family wanted someone financially secure, frequently absent and accustomed to keeping professional details private.

They called me the Colonel before I ever told Derek my rank.

I studied the messages inside Rachel’s office.

Derek had originally agreed to date me for six months.

Then he wrote to Suzanne:

She trusts slowly. Marriage will take longer.

Months later:

She keeps the apartment separate. Dad needs another route.

And finally, one week before our wedding:

I think I love her. We can stop after the company loan.

Suzanne replied:

Love her after we’re protected.

I expected the discovery to erase every good memory.

It did not.

That was worse.

Some of Derek’s laughter had been genuine. Some nights, he held me because he wanted to. He remembered how I took my coffee and called before difficult assignments.

Real affection had existed inside a calculated beginning.

But love did not purify manipulation.

It only made leaving more painful.

Derek was served with divorce papers and a temporary restraining order.

He responded by telling friends I had become unstable after a stressful military assignment. Suzanne posted photographs of my bandaged face with a caption suggesting I had burned myself during an “emotional episode.”

The hospital records disproved her.

The building security camera supplied something stronger.

It had captured audio from the morning of the assault.

Derek’s voice was clear:

Give Suzanne the card.

Then my refusal.

Then the crash of the mug.

Then:

See what you made me do.

The recording spread no further than investigators and attorneys, but Derek knew it existed.

He stopped speaking publicly.

Harold did not.

He arranged a meeting inside the apartment, claiming he wanted to surrender my financial documents peacefully.

Police approved the meeting under controlled conditions. Miami-Dade officers waited in the hallway.

Because secured government equipment still needed to be inventoried, two uniformed Army security personnel accompanied me.

I wore my black dress uniform.

Not to frighten them.

I had come directly from a formal command review where I was cleared of every allegation Derek’s family tried to manufacture.

When the elevator opened, I heard shouting inside the apartment.

Suzanne was accusing Derek of ruining everything.

Harold was demanding that both of them remain calm.

Then Derek saw me enter.

May you like

He looked at the uniform, the healing burn across my cheek and the two soldiers behind me.

For the first time since I had known him, he understood that the private version of me he controlled had never been the whole woman.
