CHAPTER 2

CHAPTER 2: THE SILVER PLATTER

Daniel thought I was cooking noodles.

I was arranging the end of his life on a serving tray.

I placed the financial records first.

Printed cleanly.

Highlighted.

Transfer dates, account numbers, forged authorization attempts, and the shell LLC Daniel had created under his cousin’s name.

Then came the photos.

Daniel walking into the Langham Hotel with Vanessa’s best friend, Elise.

Daniel kissing her in a parking garage.

Daniel handing her a necklace charged to one of my business accounts.

I added the encrypted flash drive last.

Small.

Black.

Ugly in its simplicity.

On it were the recordings that made every paper on the tray undeniable.

I did not put the red lingerie there because I was jealous.

I put it there because Daniel had bought it for Elise using a card connected to my private investment account, then tried to categorize it as “client hospitality.”

Even in betrayal, he was stupid.

I covered everything with the silver dome lid.

Then I sent one text.

Ready.

My phone buzzed almost immediately.

Detective Ross: Open the front door when you return to the dining room. Officers will enter on signal.

I walked to the side entrance first.

Daniel never noticed that the kitchen hallway had a separate door near the garage.

He did not notice most things that did not serve him.

I unlocked it.

Then I took the tray in both hands and walked back toward the dining room.

Their voices grew clearer.

Gloria was speaking.

“She has no spine. That’s the problem. You gave her too much freedom in the beginning.”

Daniel answered, “That ends tonight.”

Vanessa laughed.

“She looked like she was about to cry. Honestly, Daniel, you should’ve done this earlier.”

I paused outside the door.

Not because I was afraid.

Because some truths deserve a witness, and I wanted every word to settle into the microphone hidden in my blouse.

Then I stepped inside.

Daniel looked up first.

His face softened into smug satisfaction.

At that table, he truly believed he was king.

The chandelier glowed above him. Crystal glasses sparkled near his hand. Gloria sat like a queen mother. Vanessa watched me with the bored cruelty of someone who had never paid for the rooms she judged other women inside.

I placed the tray in front of Daniel.

“Your dinner is served,” I said.

Daniel’s smile widened.

“Finally.”

Gloria looked at the covered platter.

“You see? Discipline works.”

Vanessa leaned forward.

“What is it? Please don’t tell me she ruined pasta.”

I looked at Daniel.

“I think you’ll appreciate the surprise.”

Then I lifted the lid.

For one heartbeat, nobody moved.

Daniel stared down at the photos.

His smile vanished slowly, like blood draining from a wound.

Gloria’s wine glass stopped halfway to her mouth.

Vanessa’s face went blank.

Under the chandelier, on polished silver, lay the truth they had spent two years believing I was too weak to gather.

Daniel reached for the flash drive.

I moved it away with one finger.

“Careful,” I said. “That’s already been copied.”

His eyes snapped to mine.

For the first time since I had known him, Daniel looked afraid.

Not sorry.

May you like

Afraid.

That was enough.
